King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The trees ask the olive to rule, even though its oil is what anoints rulers.
THE MEANING
The scene puts a living tension before you: a community wants a ruler and asks the olive tree, the source of anointing oil, to take that role. Its fruit-bearing nature stands behind the office it is asked to enter. The question reaches you now: what happens to a source of sustenance when it is recruited to govern?
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that the source that supplies a ruler’s anointing must itself become a ruler.
THE ROOT
מָשַׁח
māšaḥ
GROWS FROM
משח
To smear or rub on; to anoint.
“anoint” in this verse is māšaḥ. The anointed one and the act of anointing grow from the same root. The parable asks the source of the oil behind that act to occupy the office marked by it.
ALSO GROWS
mashiach: Anointed one.
מָשִׁיחַ
This branch names the one who bears the mark of the act the olive tree is asked to provide.
mishchah: Anointing or anointing oil.
מִשְׁחָה
This branch keeps the concrete oil close to the verb, connecting the olive’s fruit to the mark of kingship.
מָלְכָה
mālĕḵāh
GROWS FROM
מלך
To rule as king; to exercise kingship.
The plea to reign and the earlier word for king share one root. The trees are asking the olive not merely to bear a title but to embody rule over them.
ALSO GROWS
melekh: King.
מֶלֶךְ
This is the ruler the trees first seek to appoint, from the same root as their plea to reign.
malkhut: Kingship or kingdom.
מַלְכוּת
This branch names the realm or state of rule the trees are asking the olive to take on.
THE PATTERN
A community’s appeal for one ruler concentrates authority in a single figure.
And said unto him, Behold, thou art old, and thy sons walk not in thy ways: now make us a king to judge us like all the nations. But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.THE THREAD
Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah. The same Hebrew root משח (mashach, to smear or anoint) appears in both verses. Here the olive is asked to rule; in Samuel, anointing marks David for kingship, making visible the link between the oil-bearing act and the king.
