What Does Lamentations 3:9 Mean in the King James?
He hath inclosed my ways with hewn stone, he hath made my paths crooked.

THE KEY
The verse names a confinement that reaches beyond the walls: it bends the path itself.
THE MEANING
When a way is hemmed in, the remaining path can feel bent as well, making movement hard to trust. The verse holds both pressures together: an outer enclosure and a loss of straight direction.
THE ROOT
גָּדַר
gādar
GROWS FROM
גדר
to wall around, fence in, enclose
גדר carries the concrete act of setting a wall or boundary around something; “inclosed” is a way hemmed in by a built edge. The same root can name someone who repairs a breach, so a wall can either shut off a route or restore protection, the verse’s surrounding words make it constricting here.
ALSO GROWS
gōdēr: one who builds or repairs a wall
גֹּדֵר
Ezekiel uses this form for one who makes up a breached wall, showing that enclosing can protect, while here it shuts the speaker’s routes.
gādēr: wall, fence, boundary
גָּדֵר
This related form makes the image material: a built limit around a space, not merely a difficult feeling.
THE PATTERN
When a way is obstructed, scripture pictures its restoration as the crooked route being made straight and passable.
In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.Every valley shall be exalted, and every mountain and hill shall be made low: and the crooked shall be made straight, and the rough places plain:And make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way; but let it rather be healed.THE THREAD
And I sought for a man among them, that should make up the hedge, and stand in the gap before me for the land, that I should not destroy it: but I found none.Lamentations uses גָּדַר (gādar, to wall in) for enclosure; Ezekiel repeats the same root in גֹּדֵר גָּדֵר (gōdēr gādēr, one who builds or repairs a wall). The same wall can seal off the way here or be rebuilt at a breach there, revealing how this verse’s doubled image makes enclosure constricting.
