What Does Leviticus 11:8 Mean in the King James?
Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcase shall ye not touch; they are unclean to you.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse makes uncleanness a bodily boundary and calls it “to you,” a relation rather than a moral verdict.
THE MEANING
The boundary reaches into your body twice: you do not eat the flesh, and you do not touch the carcass. “Unclean to you” names the relation the verse establishes between you and these animals; it does not call them morally evil. Its focus is concrete contact, what enters your body and what your body touches.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the idea that cleanness is only an inward attitude: here it is bound to eating and touching.
THE ROOT
תִּגָּעוּ
tiggāʿû
GROWS FROM
נגע
n-g-ʿ
To touch, reach, or strike.
The verse’s word for touching is nagaʿ, a root that also appears in negaʿ, a mark or affliction. The root holds contact near bodily impact, making touch one of the verse’s concrete boundaries.
ALSO GROWS
nagaʿ: Touch, reach, or strike.
נָגַע
This verb names the bodily contact the verse forbids.
negaʿ: A mark, lesion, plague, or affliction.
נֶגַע
This noun keeps contact close to bodily impact in the same root family.
טְמֵאִים
ṭəmēʾîm
GROWS FROM
טמא
ṭ-m-ʾ
To be unclean or defiled.
The plural adjective belongs to a word family that names both the state of uncleanness and the act of making something unclean. “Unclean to you” keeps that status relational: it describes how you meet the carcass, not its moral character.
ALSO GROWS
tumʾah: Uncleanness or impurity.
טֻמְאָה
This noun names the state described by “unclean.”
timmēʾ: To defile or make unclean.
טִמֵּא
This verb shows the same root can name the movement into that state.
THE PATTERN
In these passages, contact is consequential: touching uncleanness marks a boundary, while touch can also be the point where cleansing arrives.
And for these ye shall be unclean: whosoever toucheth the carcase of them shall be unclean until the even. Then said Haggai, If one that is unclean by a dead body touch any of these, shall it be unclean? And the priests answered and said, It shall be unclean. And Jesus put forth his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou clean. And immediately his leprosy was cleansed.THE THREAD
But of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said, Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.The same root, נגע (nagaʿ, “touch”), appears beside a prohibition on eating. That shared pairing shows the boundary reaching beyond what the body takes in to the point where it makes contact.
