What Does Leviticus 17:3 Mean in the King James?
What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that killeth an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that killeth it out of the camp,

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The camp boundary does not split slaughter into accountable and unaccountable acts; the same act is named on both sides of it.
THE MEANING
Your actions do not become unrelated to their meaning when you cross a boundary. The verse names the same slaughter inside the camp and outside it; the place changes, but the act stays within the rule’s reach.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
An act falls outside accountability if it happens beyond the community’s boundary.
THE ROOT
יִשְׁחַט
yishḥaṭ
GROWS FROM
שׁחט
sh-ḥ-ṭ
Slaughter, especially the deliberate slaughter of an animal.
“killeth” in this verse is yishḥaṭ. The verb שָׁחַט (shāḥaṭ, to slaughter) names animal slaughter, including sacrificial killing. It occurs twice here, so the camp boundary changes the setting while the act remains the same.
ALSO GROWS
shāḥaṭ: To slaughter
שָׁחַט
This base verb names the animal-killing action repeated in the verse, while “in the camp” and “outside the camp” change only its setting.
shechitah: Slaughter; the act of slaughtering
שְׁחִיטָה
This noun preserves the act as deliberate animal slaughter, giving “killeth” here a more specific texture than a general word for harm.
THE PATTERN
A change of location does not by itself sever an act from its governing relationship.
And bringeth it not unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, to offer an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD; blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people:Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father.Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.THE THREAD
Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.Exodus uses this same root, שׁחט (sh-ḥ-ṭ, slaughter), for the slaughter of the Passover lamb. The shared verb keeps the concrete act in view, while each verse’s setting shows where that act stands within its rule.
