What Does Leviticus 25:28 Mean in the King James?
But if he be not able to restore it to him, then that which is sold shall remain in the hand of him that hath bought it until the year of jubile: and in the jubile it shall go out, and he shall return unto his possession.

THE KEY
The Hebrew uses the same root for the restoration the seller cannot afford and the return that comes at Jubilee, joining what human means cannot recover with what release restores.
THE MEANING
You can be unable to restore what has left your hand without making that loss permanent. The holding remains with its buyer only until its appointed release; then it leaves that hand and returns to its possession. The verse holds a boundary around that return even when present means cannot bring it about.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
If I cannot recover it now, it is lost to me forever.
THE ROOT
הָשִׁיב
hashiv
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
Turn back or return; in its causative form, bring back or restore.
“restore / return” in this verse is hashiv. The verse uses הָשִׁיב (hashiv, restore it) when the seller cannot raise enough, then וְשָׁב (veshav, he returns) when Jubilee arrives; both come from שׁוּב. English separates recovering value from returning to possession, while Hebrew holds them together as one turn-back movement.
ALSO GROWS
shuv: Turn back; return.
שׁוּב
The base form names the return movement carried by both verbs in the verse.
teshuvah: Return; turning back.
תְּשׁוּבָה
This noun preserves the same turning-back sense, showing return as a movement and not only a transfer.
meshiv: One who brings back; restores.
מֵשִׁיב
This causative form echoes הָשִׁיב, the restoration the seller cannot complete with his own means.
THE PATTERN
When loss is bounded by release, what has been held can return to its proper place.
And ye shall hallow the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout all the land unto all the inhabitants thereof: it shall be a jubile unto you; and ye shall return every man unto his possession, and ye shall return every man unto his family. The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me; because the LORD hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek; he hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;Whom the heaven must receive until the times of restitution of all things, which God hath spoken by the mouth of all his holy prophets since the world began.THE THREAD
That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee.Deuteronomy repeats שׁוּב in “turn thy captivity” and “will return,” the same root carried by this verse’s “restore” and “return.” Here the return reaches beyond a holding: what has been scattered can be gathered back toward belonging.
