What Does Leviticus 25:4 Mean in the King James?
But in the seventh year shall be a sabbath of rest unto the land, a sabbath for the LORD: thou shalt neither sow thy field, nor prune thy vineyard.

THE KEY
The Sabbath is not only a day people observe; the land itself is granted a year in which human hands stop claiming its yield.
THE MEANING
The land is given a year in which human hands cease sowing and pruning; its pause is a Sabbath to the LORD. The verse speaks into lives measured only by output: even what sustains life has a rhythm in which it is left unworked.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that what is useful must be kept in constant production, or that every pause is waste.
THE ROOT
שַׁבָּת
shabbat
GROWS FROM
שבת
sh-b-t
To cease, stop, or desist; שַׁבָּת (shabbat) is a cessation or Sabbath.
The KJV phrase “sabbath of rest” renders שַׁבָּת שַׁבָּתוֹן (shabbat shabbaton, a Sabbath of complete rest), two forms from one root. The land’s own ceasing is named as Sabbath to the LORD. The pause belongs to the ground’s rhythm, not only to human observance.
ALSO GROWS
shavat: To stop or cease activity.
שָׁבַת
The verb names what the land does: it stops yielding to sowing and pruning for a season.
shabbaton: A Sabbath observance or complete rest.
שַׁבָּתוֹן
This form echoes shabbat in the verse’s “sabbath of rest,” making the land’s cessation emphatic.
THE PATTERN
Sustaining life includes protected seasons of cessation, when creation and people are released from continuous production.
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. But the seventh year thou shalt let it rest and lie still; that the poor of thy people may eat: and what they leave the beasts of the field shall eat. In like manner thou shalt deal with thy vineyard, and with thy oliveyard. And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:THE THREAD
There remaineth therefore a rest to the people of God.The Greek σαββατισμός (sabbatismos, Sabbath rest) carries the Sabbath word into a rest that remains for God’s people. Leviticus gives that cessation to the land; Hebrews shows the same Sabbath-shaped pause belongs to human life as well.
