THE KEY
Here, an offering is a gift made visible through movement from human hands before the LORD.
THE MEANING
What is placed in human hands becomes an offering through its deliberate movement before the LORD. The hands receive and carry the gift, presenting it openly rather than leaving it still.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A sacred offering must stay untouched by human hands. Here, it is placed in Aaron’s and his sons’ hands and presented through their movement before the LORD.
THE ROOT
וַיָּנֶף
wayyanef
GROWS FROM
נוף
n-w-p
To move to and fro; wave or brandish.
“waved” in this verse is wayyanef. English makes “wave offering” sound like a ritual category, while the Hebrew keeps the action inside the name: tenufah is an offering presented by waving. The same root can describe a rod shaking in someone’s hand, so the gesture here shows what has been entrusted to human hands moving before the LORD.
ALSO GROWS
tenufah: Waving; a wave offering.
תְּנוּפָה
This noun names the offering through the movement by which it is presented.
henif: To shake or brandish; the same root’s verb form in Isaiah 10:15.
הֵנִיף
There the rod appears to shake itself against the one lifting it, echoing the question of whose hands move what.
THE PATTERN
What is entrusted to human hands becomes an offering as it is deliberately presented before God.
And thou shalt put all in the hands of Aaron, and in the hands of his sons; and shalt wave them for a wave offering before the LORD.His own hands shall bring the offerings of the LORD made by fire, the fat with the breast, it shall he bring, that the breast may be waved for a wave offering before the LORD.I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.THE THREAD
Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? or shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake itself against them that lift it up, or as if the staff should lift up itself, as if it were no wood.Isaiah uses the same root, נוף (nuph, to wave or brandish), for a rod that seems to shake against the one lifting it. The echo sharpens this verse: Aaron’s hands move what has been placed into them, and the offering’s motion is directed before the LORD.
