THE KEY
The Hebrew root for “what remains” also yields “surplus” and “profit,” so the excess is still part of the act’s reckoning.
THE MEANING
What remains of the flesh and bread still has a defined end; the verse keeps the leftover within the act rather than leaving it unaccounted for. Fire consumes what remains, so completion reaches the surplus too.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that only the portion first set apart matters dissolves here: the remainder also receives a defined fate.
THE ROOT
הַנּוֹתָר
hanotar
GROWS FROM
יתר
To remain over, be left as surplus, or exceed.
English gives this form as “remaineth,” but the root also names what is left over as surplus; from that seed comes יִתְרוֹן (yitron, “profit, advantage”). The leftover is not linguistically outside the account: the verse’s fire reaches even what exceeds the first portion.
ALSO GROWS
yeter: Remainder, surplus; what remains over.
יֶתֶר
It makes the surplus meaning inside “remaineth” visible: what remains is what is over.
yitron: Profit, advantage; what is gained.
יִתְרוֹן
This branch links what remains over with what counts as gain, showing that the remainder belongs to the larger reckoning.
THE PATTERN
What remains after the main portion is still accounted for and given a definite fate.
And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.THE THREAD
And ye shall let nothing of it remain until the morning; and that which remaineth of it until the morning ye shall burn with fire. Both verses use הַנּוֹתָר (hanotar, “what remains over”), from יתר (yathar, “remain over”), and both end the remainder in fire. The shared wording shows that what remains is included in the portion’s full completion.
