What Does Luke 10:21 Mean in the King James?
In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes: even so, Father; for so it seemed good in thy sight.

THE KEY
The verse makes revelation an uncovering: what eludes mastery is disclosed where perception remains open to receive.
THE MEANING
The reader encounters joy in the breath and gratitude for a world where seeing is not reserved for those called wise and discerning. What remains hidden from mastery is disclosed to the small and receptive, and this opening is named as the Father’s good pleasure.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that insight belongs chiefly to the most informed is undone: wisdom and discernment do not guarantee seeing, and smallness does not exclude anyone from revelation.
THE ROOT
ἀπεκάλυψας
apekálypsas
GROWS FROM
καλύπτω
kalýptō
to cover or cover over
“revealed” in this verse is apekálypsas. The verb for revealing grows from the word for covering: what is disclosed is uncovered. This makes the contrast in the verse vivid, some things remain covered to the wise and discerning, while they are opened to babes.
ALSO GROWS
apokalyptō: to uncover, disclose, reveal
ἀποκαλύπτω
The compound carries the sense of removing a covering, so revelation appears as uncovering rather than adding something new to sight.
kalýptra: covering, veil
καλύπτρα
This word from the same family names the covering itself, illuminating the verse’s movement from what is hidden to what is disclosed.
πνεύματι
pneúmati
GROWS FROM
πνέω
pnéō
to blow or breathe
πνεῦμα belongs to a Greek family of blowing and breath, so the phrase lets joy be heard in living breath as well as inward life. The English “spirit” carries this breath resonance beneath the surface.
ALSO GROWS
pnoḗ: breath, blowing
πνοή
This related word makes the breath sense audible within the same Greek family as the verse’s “spirit.”
empnéō: to breathe into, inspire
ἐμπνέω
The shared family links breath with inward animation, giving the joy in this verse a living, breathed quality.
THE PATTERN
Revelation unsettles mastery by opening understanding to the simple and exposing the limits of the wise.
Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple. But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;THE THREAD
Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.Luke’s “revealed” comes from the Greek family of καλύπτω (kalýptō, to cover); here Paul names the κάλυμμα (kálymma, veil) that is taken away. Both passages picture seeing as an uncovering: what is disclosed is already there beneath the covering.
