THE KEY
Compassion takes on the wounded person’s weight, using the helper’s own resources to carry care all the way to shelter.
THE MEANING
Pain meets care that is physical and costly: wounds are bound, oil and wine are poured in, and the injured person rides on the helper’s own animal. The care continues into shelter, where attention does not end with the first act of aid.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that compassion is only a feeling or a brief gesture: here it accepts the injured person’s weight, uses its own resources, and carries responsibility into the next place.
THE ROOT
ἐπεμελήθη
epemelēthē
GROWS FROM
μέλω
melō
to matter, concern, or be cared about
“took care” in this verse is epemelēthē. The verb gives care the sense of sustained attention to what matters. Its placement gathers the binding, treatment, carrying, and sheltering into one continuing concern for the wounded person.
ALSO GROWS
melei: it matters; it concerns
μέλει
This form makes care a response to what matters enough to hold attention.
epimeleia: care; attention
ἐπιμέλεια
This related word names the attentive care that continues beyond a single helpful act.
THE PATTERN
Compassion becomes visible through material care that meets bodily need and carries responsibility forward.
Is it not to deal thy bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to thy house? when thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me.And one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?THE THREAD
And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, when I come again, I will repay thee.“Take care of him” uses the same Greek verb as “took care” here. The care continues after the helper leaves: it is entrusted to another person, funded, and held open into the future.
