This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The servant’s first violence is the sentence in his heart: he turns a delay into permission, then treats people as if they belong to him.

The verse exposes the moment waiting is reinterpreted as impunity: “my lord delayeth” becomes permission to strike those beneath him and indulge himself. The violence follows from the servant’s belief that accountability is far away. This pattern is present wherever someone with power treats delay as absence.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that a delayed reckoning is no reckoning, or that another person’s apparent absence makes those in your care yours to use.

χρονίζει

chronízei

GROWS FROM

χρον-

chron-

Time, duration, the span in which something takes place.

“delayeth” in this verse is chronízei. Luke’s verb belongs to the word family of ⁨χρόνος⁩, time: the master is described as delayed, not as saying he will never come. The servant turns a long interval into a conclusion of absence, then uses that conclusion to strike and consume.

ALSO GROWS

chrónos: Time, a span or duration

χρόνος

The noun beneath the delay verb keeps attention on elapsed time; the servant treats that interval as though it erased the master’s claim.

chronotribéō: Spend time, delay

χρονοτριβέω

This related compound joins time with spending it; here the servant acts as if the interval itself belongs to him.

καρδίᾳ

kardía

GROWS FROM

καρδ-

kard-

The heart as the inner center of thought, intention, and desire.

The servant’s corruption begins as a sentence within him: his heart supplies the account that makes his actions seem permissible. Greek compounds preserve the heart as a center that can become hard and can be known; what begins there proceeds into his treatment of others.

ALSO GROWS

sklērokardía: Hardness of heart

σκληροκαρδία

This compound retains ⁨καρδία⁩ within a word for hardness, showing how the inward center can settle into a resistant state.

kardiognṓstēs: Knower of hearts

καρδιογνώστης

This compound names one who knows the heart; the servant’s inward explanation is not sealed off from what his actions reveal.

Entrusted power turns predatory when its holder treats others as resources and apparent delay as impunity.

But and if that evil servant shall say in his heart, My lord delayeth his coming; And shall begin to smite his fellowservants, and to eat and drink with the drunken;
Matthew 24:48-49 · KJVThe same private conclusion that the master is delayed becomes the setting for striking fellow servants and feasting.
The diseased have ye not strengthened, neither have ye healed that which was sick, neither have ye bound up that which was broken, neither have ye brought again that which was driven away, neither have ye sought that which was lost; but with force and with cruelty have ye ruled them.
Ezekiel 34:4 · KJVThose entrusted with care use their position to rule with force and cruelty instead of tending those under them.
But Jesus called them to him, and saith unto them, Ye know that they which are accounted to rule over the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and their great ones exercise authority upon them.
Mark 10:42 · KJVThe verse names the structure of domination: those with authority exercise it upon others.
For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies:
Matthew 15:19 · KJV

Matthew uses the same Greek word, ⁨καρδία⁩ (kardía), meaning “heart.” Luke shows the sequence in miniature: the servant’s heart names the delay, and his hands strike.
