What Does Luke 12:48 Mean in the King James?
But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.

THE KEY
What reaches your hands sets the measure of what is sought from you; not knowing lowers the blows but does not remove them.
THE MEANING
What you know shapes the consequence, and what is put into your hands shapes what is sought from you. The one who acts without knowing still receives blows, fewer but real; the one given much faces much required, and the one entrusted with much is asked for more.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that not knowing makes you consequence-free: the verse still says “few stripes.” It also undoes the assumption that what is entrusted to you carries no corresponding reckoning.
THE ROOT
ζητηθήσεται
zētēthēsetai
GROWS FROM
ζητέω
zēteō
To seek or look for; here, what is sought is required from someone.
The word rendered “required” belongs to the Greek family of “seek”: much is sought from the person who receives much. Accountability becomes concrete, the entrusted thing is what is looked for from the one holding it.
ALSO GROWS
ekzēteō: Seek out, inquire, or demand.
ἐκζητέω
This compound keeps the seeking action and shows how a search can become a demand for what is due.
epizēteō: Seek earnestly or desire.
ἐπιζητέω
This branch also carries active seeking, illuminating the verse’s sense of something being looked for from the receiver.
παρέθεντο
parethento
GROWS FROM
τίθημι (tithēmi), through παρατίθημι (paratithēmi)
To put or place; παρατίθημι means to place beside, set before, or entrust.
“Committed” carries a placement image: much is set beside someone and placed in their keeping. This makes the clause about custody, not mere possession; the weight lies in what has been placed in your care.
ALSO GROWS
epitithēmi: Lay upon or place on.
ἐπιτίθημι
The shared placing root keeps visible the idea of something being put into a person’s care.
parathēkē: A deposit or something entrusted.
παραθήκη
This related noun names what has been placed in another’s keeping, bringing the verse’s stewardship image into focus.
ἐδόθη
edothē
GROWS FROM
δίδωμι
didōmi
To give, grant, or hand over.
“given” in this verse is edothē. The abundance is marked as received: it comes to a person, and the response is measured in relation to what arrived. The phrase “much committed” deepens this from receiving something to holding something entrusted in your care.
ALSO GROWS
apodidōmi: Give back, render, or repay.
ἀποδίδωμι
This compound carries giving in the returning direction, echoing the verse’s movement from what is given to what is later sought.
metadidōmi: Share or impart.
μεταδίδωμι
This branch shows that what is received can also be passed on, extending the verse’s picture of resources placed in human hands.
THE PATTERN
What a person receives and knows shapes the measure of responsibility that returns to them.
If thou sayest, Behold, we knew it not; doth not he that pondereth the heart consider it? and he that keepeth thy soul, doth not he know it? and shall not he render to every man according to his works? After a long time the lord of those servants cometh, and reckoneth with them.As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.THE THREAD
And he called him, and said unto him, How is it that I hear this of thee? give an account of thy stewardship; for thou mayest be no longer steward. This verse gives the image behind “much required”: the entrusted one is called to account for the stewardship placed in their hands. Luke 12:48 names how that reckoning is measured, by what is given and entrusted.
