What Does Luke 13:19 Mean in the King James?
It is like a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and cast into his garden; and it grew, and waxed a great tree; and the fowls of the air lodged in the branches of it.

THE KEY
The seed’s greatness is revealed when its branches become a home for lives beyond its own.
THE MEANING
God’s governance is at work in a beginning that looks too small to matter. It grows into shelter, and other lives find room to settle in what seemed only a seed. What looks small now already carries the possibility of shelter for others.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that a beginning must look powerful before it can become a place of refuge.
THE ROOT
κατεσκήνωσεν
kateskēnōsen
GROWS FROM
σκην-
skēn-
A tent, shelter, or dwelling place.
“lodged” in this verse is kateskēnōsen. The birds do more than visit the branches: the word carries the sense of settling in a dwelling. The tree’s growth reaches its fullness as a place where other lives can stay.
ALSO GROWS
skēnē: tent; dwelling place
σκηνή
The root’s tent image makes the branches feel like a shelter where the birds can settle.
skēnoō: to dwell; to pitch a tent
σκηνόω
This related verb shows the same root moving from shelter itself to the act of making a dwelling there.
THE PATTERN
Growth in God’s governance becomes shelter where other lives can settle.
By them shall the fowls of the heaven have their habitation, which sing among the branches. In the mountain of the height of Israel will I plant it: and it shall bring forth boughs, and bear fruit, and be a goodly cedar: and under it shall dwell all fowl of every wing; in the shadow of the branches thereof shall they dwell.Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.THE THREAD
Which indeed is the least of all seeds: but when it is grown, it is the greatest among herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the air come and lodge in the branches thereof.Matthew’s parallel uses the same Greek dwelling-root for the birds lodging in the branches. That shared root shows that the growth reaches its fullness as a dwelling place, not simply as height.
