This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The word translated “wasted” pictures entrusted goods being scattered, so the crisis is stewardship turning into dispersion.

What is in your hands is not automatically yours. The steward stands accused of scattering goods entrusted to him. The verse makes accountability part of care: the one handling another’s resources is seen in how those resources are kept or dispersed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that access equals ownership: holding something for a time does not erase whose it is.

διασκορπίζων

diaskorpizōn

GROWS FROM

σκορπίζω

skorpizō

To scatter or disperse; the prefix ⁨διά⁩ (dia) adds the sense of scattering through or across.

“Wasted” carries the picture of scattering, not just spending: what was held together in trust is dispersed. Luke 15:13 uses this same verb for the younger son’s wasting of his substance, making dissipation a literal scattering.

ALSO GROWS

skorpizō: To scatter, disperse.

σκορπίζω

The base verb supplies the image beneath “wasted”: resources are spread away from a center of care.

diaskorpizō: To scatter widely, disperse.

διασκορπίζω

The prefixed form used here pictures goods dispersed away from the steward’s keeping.

οἰκονόμον

oikonomon

GROWS FROM

⁨οἶκος⁩ + ⁨νέμω⁩ (oikos + nemō)

Household + manage, arrange, or distribute: a manager of household resources.

The title joins a household to its management; it identifies the steward by whose resources he administers, not by what he owns. The contrast is built into the word: he handles goods that remain the rich man’s.

ALSO GROWS

oikonomos: Household manager, steward.

οἰκονόμος

This is the role named in the verse: the person entrusted with managing another’s household.

oikonomia: Household management, administration, stewardship.

οἰκονομία

The related word names the administration itself, keeping attention on the responsibility attached to entrusted goods.

What is entrusted to you remains accountable to the one whose it is.

A Psalm of David. The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.
Psalm 24:1 · KJVThe verse places all resources and life within the LORD’s ownership.
And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
Luke 12:42 · KJVThe steward’s authority is shown through managing what belongs to his lord and providing for the household.
Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
1 Corinthians 4:2 · KJVStewardship is measured by faithfulness to the trust placed in someone’s care.
And not many days after the younger son gathered all together, and took his journey into a far country, and there wasted his substance with riotous living.
Luke 15:13 · KJV

The word translated “wasted” here is the same Greek verb used of the younger son’s waste: ⁨διασκορπίζω⁩ (diaskorpizō), to scatter widely or disperse. The shared root makes the charge concrete: what was entrusted to the steward is pictured as scattered out of his keeping.
