This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The buyer is caught up in the disruption too: what is expelled is the whole transaction, not just its seller.

This scene speaks now wherever a space set apart for God’s presence is organized around buying and selling. Jesus drives out both seller and buyer, so the clearing reaches every side of the exchange.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that only the seller is implicated, while the buyer remains an innocent bystander, dissolves here.

ἐκβάλλειν

ekballein

GROWS FROM

⁨βάλλω⁩ (ballō), with ⁨ἐκ-⁩ (ek, out)

To throw; with the prefix meaning “out,” to drive or throw out.

“cast out” in this verse is ekballein. The Greek makes the action forceful: the temple is actively emptied. Both sides of the exchange are driven out, so the clearing removes the transaction’s participants, not merely one party.

ALSO GROWS

ballō: To throw or cast.

βάλλω

The action begins with a forceful casting, not a quiet refusal.

ekbolē: A throwing out; a discharge.

ἐκβολή

This related word describes throwing cargo overboard; here, too, removal clears a space of what occupies it.

ἀγοράζοντας

agorazontas

GROWS FROM

ἀγορά

agora

The marketplace or public place of exchange.

“them that bought” in this verse is agorazontas. The word for buyers carries the marketplace into the temple with it. The verse includes buyers in the expulsion, exposing the exchange itself as what has occupied the sacred precinct.

ALSO GROWS

agora: Marketplace; public square.

ἀγορά

The buyer’s word belongs to the language of the marketplace, making the commercial activity inside the temple visible.

exagorazō: To buy out; to redeem.

ἐξαγοράζω

The same word family can describe buying out or redeeming; here, the buyers themselves are driven out of the temple.

What is set apart for God’s presence is defined by that presence, not by what occupies it.

Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people.
Isaiah 56:7 · KJVThe house is named by its purpose: prayer and welcome for all people.
What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own?
1 Corinthians 6:19 · KJVThe temple’s meaning reaches the reader’s own body, where God’s presence dwells.
Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.
Matthew 7:5 · KJV

Luke’s “cast out” and Matthew’s “cast out” use the same Greek verb, ⁨ἐκβάλλω⁩ (ekballō), meaning “to drive out.” In Luke, Jesus clears the temple; in Matthew, the beam must be driven out before clear sight is possible.
