And she was a widow of about fourscore and four years, which departed not from the temple, but served God with fastings and prayers night and day.

THE KEY
The word translated “served” is latreuō, sacred service, so her fasting and prayers are the shape her unbroken presence in the temple takes.
THE MEANING
Loss and passing years do not erase the reader’s capacity for presence. Here, service takes the form of remaining with God, expressed through prayer and fasting by night and day.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that age or widowhood means a life has moved beyond meaningful participation: she is actively serving God.
THE ROOT
λατρεύουσα
latreuousa
GROWS FROM
λατρεύω
latreuō
To serve or render sacred service to God.
“served” in this verse is latreuousa. English can make serving sound like a task separate from worship, but this Greek word names service rendered to God. Its related noun latreia also describes an embodied offering as service, so Anna’s prayers and fastings are presented as the ongoing form her service takes.
ALSO GROWS
latreia: Service rendered to God; worship.
λατρεία
Romans 12:1 uses this related noun for the offering of the body as service, extending the word-family beyond temple duties.
latreuō: To serve or render sacred service.
λατρεύω
Revelation 7:15 uses the same verb for serving God day and night in his temple, closely echoing Anna’s continual service.
THE PATTERN
Service to God is a whole-life orientation that spans ordinary time rather than a single religious act.
A Song of degrees. Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, which by night stand in the house of the LORD.I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them.THE THREAD
Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. The Greek verb translated “serve” is λατρεύω (latreuō) in both verses, and Revelation repeats the image of serving in the temple by night and day. That shared wording lets Anna’s prayer and fasting appear as a continuous form of sacred service.
