THE KEY
The “apostles” are already the sent ones, yet the hour finds them seated with Jesus: sending begins in nearness.
THE MEANING
When an appointed moment arrives, Jesus is seated with the ones named for sending. The ones who will go are with him first; nearness and outward purpose share the same scene.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being sent means being left alone: the sent ones are with Jesus as the hour arrives.
THE ROOT
ἀπόστολοι
apostoloi
GROWS FROM
στέλλω (stellō), in ἀποστέλλω (apostellō)
Send or dispatch; ἀποστέλλω means to send forth, and ἀπόστολος names one who is sent.
English preserves “apostles” as a title, while the Greek keeps its connection to being sent audible. The verse holds the gathered moment and outward mission together: the sent ones are with Jesus as the hour arrives.
ALSO GROWS
apostellō: Send forth, dispatch.
ἀποστέλλω
This sending family is carried inside the name “apostles.”
apostolē: Sending, commission.
ἀποστολή
It makes the movement within their title explicit: the sent identity carries a commission.
THE PATTERN
Those who are sent are held in the sender’s presence as their mission takes shape.
And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain. And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,Then said Jesus to them again, Peace be unto you: as my Father hath sent me, even so send I you.THE THREAD
And he ordained twelve, that they should be with him, and that he might send them forth to preach,The same Greek sending family names Luke’s apostles and the action in Mark: Jesus appoints the twelve to be with him and to send them forth. Luke’s seated scene holds that relationship in one image, the sent ones are with him as the hour arrives.
