This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The crowd can walk beside her, but no crowd can make her only son less irreplaceable.

Death is carried through the city gate in a public procession: the man being carried out is his mother’s only son, and many people accompany her. The scene holds two truths together for the reader now: her loss is witnessed, and no crowd can make the missing son interchangeable.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This dissolves the belief that being surrounded means no longer being alone: the crowd is with her, while her only son is still gone.

μονογενής

monogenēs

GROWS FROM

⁨μόνος⁩ + ⁨γεν-⁩ (monos + gen-)

⁨μόνος⁩ means single or only; ⁨γεν-⁩ carries the sense of birth, kind, and kin.

The Greek word binds “only” to offspring and kin, giving the son more weight than a count of one. He is named as her singular child, making the loss familial as well as personal.

ALSO GROWS

genos: kind, family, or stock

γένος

The shared ⁨γεν-⁩ element keeps the son’s kinship in view: he is her child and family.

genesis: birth or origin

γένεσις

The related birth language echoes the bond between mother and child that the verse places in mourning.

τεθνηκώς

tethnēkōs

GROWS FROM

θνῄσκω

thnēskō

To die.

“dead” in this verse is tethnēkōs. The Greek describes one who has died, making the loss plain rather than a vague absence. Death is what the crowd carries through the gate, while the son’s singular place in his mother’s life remains named.

ALSO GROWS

apothnēskō: to die

ἀποθνῄσκω

This compound verb shares the death root and keeps the verse’s language direct.

thanatos: death

θάνατος

The related noun makes explicit the condition the procession carries out of the city.

When an only child is endangered or lost, scripture names the parent’s bond plainly and places it at the edge of death and return.

And he said, Take now thy son, thine only son Isaac, whom thou lovest, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.
Genesis 22:2 · KJVIsaac is named as Abraham’s only son at the moment his life is placed in danger.
And Elijah took the child, and brought him down out of the chamber into the house, and delivered him unto his mother: and Elijah said, See, thy son liveth.
1 Kings 17:23 · KJVA widow receives her son back after death has taken him from her.
For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
Luke 8:42 · KJVThe text names a father’s only child as she nears death.
For he had one only daughter, about twelve years of age, and she lay a dying. But as he went the people thronged him.
Luke 8:42 · KJV

Luke uses the same Greek word, ⁨μονογενής⁩ (monogenēs), for Jairus’s daughter, so the singularity is linguistic as well as familial. In both scenes, the only child is named as death presses close.
