This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The boat fills with water while Jesus sleeps inside it, holding real peril and unawakened presence in the same vessel.

Your peril can be real and already taking up space, while it is not the only reality present. Jesus is asleep in the same vessel the storm puts in danger. The scene holds both facts together without calling the danger unreal or interpreting his sleep for you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the belief that a presence that is not visibly acting is necessarily absent: Jesus remains in the endangered vessel while asleep.

συνεπληροῦντο

syneplērounto

GROWS FROM

πληρόω

plēroō

To fill up; bring to fullness.

The verb presents the vessel as being filled or swamped; the KJV makes the implied water explicit. The storm moves from force around the vessel to fullness within it, so the peril becomes an occupation of space.

ALSO GROWS

plērēs: Full; complete.

πλήρης

This word names the state toward which the vessel is moving as it takes on water.

plērōma: Fullness; full measure.

πλήρωμα

This related noun holds filling as a condition; here that condition is dangerous because of what fills the vessel.

Sleep and danger can occupy the same scene while those within it experience the scene differently.

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.
Jonah 1:5 · KJVThe sailors fear the storm while Jonah sleeps aboard the same endangered ship.
I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, LORD, only makest me dwell in safety.
Psalm 4:8 · KJVSleep can express settledness and safety rather than absence.
And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish?
Mark 4:38 · KJVJesus sleeps while the disciples voice their alarm, holding contrasting experiences together in one storm.
Which, when it was full, they drew to shore, and sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but cast the bad away.
Matthew 13:48 · KJV

The Greek root ⁨πληρόω⁩ (plēroō, “fill up”) underlies the filling in Luke and the net being full in Matthew. There, fullness marks the moment of gathering and sorting; here, what fills the vessel is water and danger, showing how the same fullness takes its meaning from what fills it.
