THE KEY
The mountain is only the setting; the real ascent is prayer’s turning toward God.
THE MEANING
The spoken words do not exhaust what can be seen: attention turns toward God in prayer, and what follows opens what the eye has not yet received. You stand inside that threshold now, where prayer is directed presence and perception can deepen.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A higher place by itself does not create revelation; the verse places prayer at the threshold.
THE ROOT
προσεύχομαι
proseuchomai
GROWS FROM
εὔχομαι (euchomai, pray or vow) + πρός (pros, toward)
Εὔχομαι means to pray, vow, or wish; πρός gives the compound a sense of directing prayer toward someone.
“pray” in this verse is proseuchomai. The Greek word for prayer carries a direction: it is turned toward someone. In this verse that orientation takes shape in Jesus’s ascent, so prayer is not just a pause but a turning toward God.
ALSO GROWS
euchomai: Pray, vow, or wish.
εὔχομαι
The base verb shows the prayer at the center of the compound.
proseuchē: Prayer.
προσευχή
This related noun names the same directed act, linking the verb here to prayer as an ongoing practice.
THE PATTERN
Turning toward God in prayer marks a threshold before fresh perception or direction.
My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour:THE THREAD
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.Luke uses the same Greek prayer family here: proseuchomai (προσεύχομαι, to pray) and proseuchē (προσευχή, prayer). In both scenes, prayer comes before a new disclosure, first a choice, then the transfiguration.
