This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

“Last” carries the sense of the far edge, and even that edge can move to the front.

Where you stand now does not settle where you stand next: those counted first can find themselves at the far edge, and those at the edge can become first. The verse speaks of rank and position as things that can turn, not fixed identities.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Being ahead now means I will always be ahead.

ἔσχατοι

eschatoi

GROWS FROM

⁨ἐσχατ-⁩ (eschat-), the stem of ⁨ἔσχατος⁩

Furthest, outermost; hence, last.

The Greek word translated “last” can point to the farthest edge, not only to what comes later in a sequence. That adds a spatial depth to the reversal: the edge itself is not a fixed place.

ALSO GROWS

eschatos: last, furthest, outermost

ἔσχατος

This form keeps the sense of being at the far edge, which gives “last” more depth than simple order.

eschatia: border, extremity, farthest region

ἐσχατιά

This related word names a place at the edge, echoing how those called “last” can occupy the outermost position.

A place that appears settled can be reversed: the low can be raised, and the high brought low.

The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.
1 Samuel 2:7 · KJVThe verse names both movements, down and up, as reversals of position.
He raiseth up the poor out of the dust, and lifteth the needy out of the dunghill; That he may set him with princes, even with the princes of his people.
Psalm 113:7-8 · KJVThe one at the lowest place is raised to sit among princes.
Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted: But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away.
James 1:9-10 · KJVThe lowly is exalted while the rich is brought low, reversing the apparent order.
And, behold, there are last which shall be first, and there are first which shall be last.
Luke 13:30 · KJV

Luke states the same reversal with the same Greek words for “first” and “last,” showing this movement is a recurring measure of position. The sense of “last” as the far edge makes the reversal feel like a change of place, not a permanent identity.
