This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The same act of casting can carry different weight, because Jesus watches the giver’s relation to what leaves the hand.

You are seen not only by the visible amount you give, but by what that giving means against what remains to you. A large sum can be counted, yet it does not by itself disclose the cost of the act. The next line brings that hidden measure into view.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie this undoes is that a larger gift is automatically a greater gift; the next line challenges that measure through someone who gives almost nothing in amount.

βάλλει

bállei éballon

GROWS FROM

βαλλ-

To throw or cast, directing something from one place toward another.

English “cast in” can sound like a neutral deposit, but ⁨βάλλω⁩ keeps the physical act of throwing in view. The widow in verse 42 is described with the same root: the action remains the same while the amount and its cost shift.

ALSO GROWS

ekballō: Cast out; drive out.

ἐκβάλλω

The same stem can direct something outward; here it directs the coins into the treasury, foregrounding the movement from giver to destination.

epiballō: Throw or lay upon.

ἐπιβάλλω

This compound keeps the physical sense of placing something through a throwing motion, making the coins more than an abstract sum.

The weight of a gift is disclosed by what it costs the giver, not by its visible size alone.

But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 · KJVThe visible appearance does not disclose the whole measure; the LORD sees what lies beneath it.
For all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in all that she had, even all her living.
Mark 12:44 · KJVThe same outward act carries a different weight when what remains to the giver is seen.
For if there be first a willing mind, it is accepted according to that a man hath, and not according to that he hath not.
2 Corinthians 8:12 · KJVThe measure of a gift takes account of what the giver actually has, not an imagined abundance.
And there came a certain poor widow, and she threw in two mites, which make a farthing.
Mark 12:42 · KJV

The rich in verse 41 and the widow in verse 42 are described with forms of ⁨βάλλω⁩ (ballō), “throw” or “cast.” The action stays the same while the amount and cost shift, making Jesus’ attention to how they give the hinge of the scene.
