This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Resurrection here is not a return to where the disciples were; the risen Jesus moves ahead into the place where they will meet him.

The verse holds rising and going ahead together: Jesus is raised, then moves before his followers into Galilee. The place of their meeting is already entered by the one they follow. His rising opens the way into what comes next.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that the risen Jesus is absent from what comes next: he is already ahead of his followers, and the next place is where they meet him.

ἐγερθῆναι

egerthēnai

GROWS FROM

ἐγερ

rouse, awaken, raise up

“risen” in this verse is egerthēnai. The Greek form is passive: “after I have been raised.” This root also names waking and raising, so the one who is raised becomes the one who goes ahead; resurrection opens into movement.

ALSO GROWS

egeirō: raise, awaken

ἐγείρω

This is the verb whose passive form appears in the verse; waking and raising belong to the same word family.

egersis: raising, rising

ἔγερσις

The same consonant stem names the rising itself as an act of being raised.

προάξω

proaxō

GROWS FROM

ἄγω

lead, bring, go

“go before” in this verse is proaxō. The form in this verse is the future of the verb meaning “lead, bring, go,” joined to a prefix meaning “before.” The phrase carries both going ahead and leading forward: Jesus enters the next place before his followers arrive.

ALSO GROWS

agō: lead, bring, go

ἄγω

This is the verb beneath “go before”; it gives the movement the force of leading.

synagō: gather together, bring together

συνάγω

The same root can describe bringing people together, echoing the gathering that follows the one who goes ahead.

prosagōgē: approach, access, a bringing near

προσαγωγή

The same root also describes being brought near, opening a connection between going ahead and coming into encounter.

The one who goes ahead turns the unknown destination into a place of meeting.

And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.
Deuteronomy 31:8 · KJVThe one who goes before is already with the one who follows.
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.
John 14:3 · KJVGoing ahead opens into a place where those who follow are received into meeting.
Whither the forerunner is for us entered, even Jesus, made an high priest for ever after the order of Melchisedec.
Hebrews 6:20 · KJVJesus enters first as forerunner, making the way ahead a path others can follow.
But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.
Mark 16:7 · KJV

The Greek verb for “go before” here is from the same root as in Mark 14:28: the risen Jesus is still going ahead of his followers. The promised destination becomes a meeting place: “there shall ye see him.”
