This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The verse joins a destroyer that does not die to a fire that cannot be extinguished, making the judgment unrelenting.

You are confronted with destruction that has no interruption: the worm does not die, and the fire is not put out. The verse leaves no image of recovery within this scene.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that every destructive consequence eventually burns itself out: here, the worm persists and the fire remains unquenched.

σβέννυται

sbennytai

GROWS FROM

σβέννυμι

sbennymi

To extinguish or quench, to put a fire out.

“quenched” in this verse is sbennytai. The Greek verb is present tense: the fire is not being extinguished. The same verb describes not quenching a smoking wick and warns against quenching the Spirit, so it can name both a fire’s continued force and the act of suppressing something alive.

ALSO GROWS

sbesei: He will quench.

σβέσει

Matthew 12:20 uses this form for the smoking flax that is not quenched, showing the same root applied to a fragile flame left alive.

sbennýte: You quench.

σβέννυτε

In 1 Thessalonians 5:19, this verb warns against quenching the Spirit; the image of extinguishing also describes suppressing what is alive and moving.

An unquenchable fire marks judgment that no human action can halt.

And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
Isaiah 66:24 · KJVThe undying worm and unquenched fire appear together as images of judgment without relief.
But if ye will not hearken unto me to hallow the sabbath day, and not to bear a burden, even entering in at the gates of Jerusalem on the sabbath day; then will I kindle a fire in the gates thereof, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem, and it shall not be quenched.
Jeremiah 17:27 · KJVThe fire consumes what it reaches and cannot be put out.
Whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and gather his wheat into the garner; but he will burn up the chaff with unquenchable fire.
Matthew 3:12 · KJVThe unquenchable fire again marks destruction that proceeds beyond anyone’s power to stop.
And they shall go forth, and look upon the carcases of the men that have transgressed against me: for their worm shall not die, neither shall their fire be quenched; and they shall be an abhorring unto all flesh.
Isaiah 66:24 · KJV

Isaiah places the same undying worm beside the fire that is not quenched. The Greek wording of Isaiah uses the same verb-root as Mark, joining both verses in one image of judgment.
