What Does Matthew 10:25 Mean in the King James?
It is enough for the disciple that he be as his master, and the servant as his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more shall they call them of his household?
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Greek repeats the word for house: the accusation aimed at the householder reaches the people who belong to his household.
THE MEANING
You become like the one you follow: the learner takes the shape of the teacher, and the servant shares the standing of the lord. When the householder is called Beelzebub, the accusation can extend to those who belong to his household. Here, belonging brings shared exposure to the names cast at its head.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that closeness to a teacher guarantees protection from public contempt dissolves: the household may inherit the accusation aimed at its head.
THE ROOT
οἰκιακούς
oikiakous
GROWS FROM
οἶκος
House, home, or household.
English separates “master of the house” from “his household,” but Greek repeats oik- in both words. The accusation moves through that shared house-word: those who belong to the household can bear the name fastened to its head.
ALSO GROWS
oikos: A house or household.
οἶκος
The same word-family is heard in both the householder and the household members in this verse.
oikeios: A member of a household, or someone belonging to it.
οἰκεῖος
Ephesians uses this family for those who belong to God’s household, making belonging, not mere proximity, the link.
oikonomos: A person entrusted with managing a household.
οἰκονόμος
This branch shows how widely the house-root reaches: from the home itself to the people and roles within it.
ἐκάλεσαν
ekalesan
GROWS FROM
καλέω
To call, summon, or name.
“called” in this verse is ekalesan. The same verb is used for the name thrown at the householder and the name that may be thrown at his household. “Call” here carries the force of accusation: the name Beelzebub is placed on the head, then extended to those attached to him.
ALSO GROWS
klēsis: A call or invitation.
κλῆσις
It shares the call-word family, showing that a call can mark a person’s relation or standing.
klētos: One who is called or invited.
κλητός
This branch carries the same idea of being named or summoned into a relation, while Matthew shows a name imposed as an accusation.
THE PATTERN
Those joined to a leader share the likeness, treatment, or fate that reaches the leader.
Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered: and I will turn mine hand upon the little ones. The disciple is not above his master: but every one that is perfect shall be as his master.Remember the word that I said unto you, The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted me, they will also persecute you; if they have kept my saying, they will keep yours also.THE THREAD
Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God;“Household” here and “household” in Matthew share the Greek oikos word-family: οἰκεῖοι (oikeioi) and οἰκιακούς (oikiakous). Matthew shows household belonging extending an accusation; Ephesians shows that same belonging as inclusion among God’s people.
