THE KEY
The Greek word for “Father” also carries the language of family and lineage, so this verse places your deepest belonging with the One in heaven.
THE MEANING
The verse gives no man on earth the name “Father”; that name belongs to the One in heaven. Your deepest belonging rests with the Father beyond every earthly claim to that place.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a human title or rank can claim ultimate authority over your identity and belonging.
THE ROOT
πατήρ
patēr
GROWS FROM
πατρ- (patr-), the Greek stem of πατήρ
Father; by extension, ancestor or familial source.
The stem πατρ- (patr-) also appears in Greek words for family and homeland, carrying associations of lineage and belonging. The verse places that deepest claim of belonging with the Father in heaven.
ALSO GROWS
patria: family, lineage
πατριά
This word shares the πατρ- stem and makes the link between fatherhood and family visible.
patris: fatherland, homeland
πατρίς
The same stem appears in a word for homeland, extending its associations to origin and belonging.
THE PATTERN
All human belonging rests beneath the one Father whose presence reaches through heaven and earth.
Have we not all one father? hath not one God created us? why do we deal treacherously every man against his brother, by profaning the covenant of our fathers? After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. One God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.THE THREAD
For this cause I bow my knees unto the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Of whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named,The Greek word for “family,” πατριά (patria, family or lineage), shares the πατρ- (patr-) stem with “Father,” πατήρ (patēr). The shared word family reveals how belonging across heaven and earth receives its name from the Father.
