What Does Matthew 28:7 Mean in the King James?
And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

THE KEY
The risen one is already going ahead, so resurrection here is not only a report about the past but a presence leading toward encounter.
THE MEANING
The announcement reaches you while the risen one is already going ahead of you. The promised meeting is not an idea held at a distance: “there shall ye see him” makes the living presence something encountered where he leads. “Lo, I have told you” leaves the message direct and complete.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that resurrection is only a past event that leaves you looking backward: the risen one is already ahead, and the meeting is still to come.
THE ROOT
ἠγέρθη
ēgerthē
GROWS FROM
ἐγείρω
egeirō
To rouse, awaken, or raise up.
English “risen” can sound like a completed state, while ἠγέρθη (ēgerthē, “was raised”) carries the action of being roused up. The verse immediately says προάγει (proagei, “goes ahead”): the raised one is already moving toward an encounter.
ALSO GROWS
egersis: A raising; resurrection.
ἔγερσις
Matthew uses this noun for “his resurrection” (Matthew 27:53), keeping resurrection within the same root as being raised.
egeire: Wake; rise.
ἔγειρε
Jesus uses this form when he tells the sleeping girl, “Damsel, I say unto thee, arise” (Mark 5:41), showing the root’s movement from sleep toward waking life.
προάγει
proagei
GROWS FROM
ἄγω (agō), with πρό (pro) prefixed
Ἄγω (agō) means “lead” or “bring”; πρό (pro) means “before.” Together they express leading ahead.
“goeth before” in this verse is proagei. The word προάγει (proagei, “goes ahead”) describes active leading into a place. Galilee is therefore not only a destination named in the message; it is where those who follow are promised an encounter.
ALSO GROWS
agōgē: Leading; conduct or manner of life.
ἀγωγή
The root can describe the course a life is led along, so going ahead carries a sense of direction as well as position.
synagōgē: A gathering; an assembly.
συναγωγή
With σύν (syn, “together”), the same root forms a word for bringing people together, linking leading with gathering.
ὄψεσθε
opsesthe
GROWS FROM
ὁράω
horaō
To see, behold, or perceive.
Ὄψεσθε (opsesthe, “you will see”) is a form of ὁράω (horaō, “see, perceive”). The promise is more than secondhand information: the risen one is to be perceived through encounter.
ALSO GROWS
horama: A vision; something seen.
ὅραμα
The same seeing-family names what is perceived, keeping sight connected to an encounter rather than an abstract claim.
opsis: Sight; appearance.
ὄψις
This branch names the visible aspect of something, echoing the verse’s promise that the disciples will see him.
THE PATTERN
The one who leads goes ahead of those who follow, making the path a place of encounter.
And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice. And they were in the way going up to Jerusalem; and Jesus went before them: and they were amazed; and as they followed, they were afraid. And he took again the twelve, and began to tell them what things should happen unto him,THE THREAD
And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.Matthew uses ἔγερσις (egersis, “resurrection”) here, from the same root as ἠγέρθη (ēgerthē, “was raised”) in the current verse. The shared root lets resurrection be heard as raising that brings the dead out and makes them visible among the living.
