King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The “single” eye is undivided, and can suggest generous, seeing, so the body’s lamp fills the whole person with light.
THE MEANING
Your eye is the body’s lamp, and its condition reaches through your whole embodied life. When your seeing is single and undivided, your whole body is full of light; the word can also suggest open-handedness, joining clear seeing with generosity.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that sight is only a passive window: the way you see reaches beyond the eye to the whole person.
THE ROOT
ἁπλοῦς
haplous
GROWS FROM
ἁπλ-
hapl-
Single, simple, undivided.
“Single” can mean more than one or focused: this word belongs to a family that also carries the sense of generosity. In a passage about treasure and mammon, the eye’s undividedness can suggest open-handed seeing as well as clear perception.
ALSO GROWS
haplotēs: Sincerity, simplicity; also generosity or bountifulness.
ἁπλότης

ἁπλῶς

φωτεινόν
phōteinos
GROWS FROM
φῶς (phōs), with the φωτ- (phōt-) stem
Light; illumination.
English uses “light” twice, but the Greek first calls the eye a lamp, λύχνος (lychnos), and then describes the body as φωτεινόν, bright or full of light. The sentence moves from the eye as lamp to the whole body illuminated.
ALSO GROWS
phōtizō: Illuminate, make bright.
φωτίζω
This is the light-family verb used for the “eyes of your understanding being enlightened” in Ephesians 1:18.
phōtismos: Illumination, enlightenment.
φωτισμός
This related noun names the state or act of being lit, echoing the body becoming full of light.
THE PATTERN
Scripture presents sight as a lamp whose condition affects whether the whole person and their path are lit or darkened.
But if thine eye be evil, thy whole body shall be full of darkness. If therefore the light that is in thee be darkness, how great is that darkness! The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.THE THREAD
The eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that ye may know what is the hope of his calling, and what the riches of the glory of his inheritance in the saints,Matthew describes the body as φωτεινόν (phōteinos), full of light; Ephesians uses φωτίζω (phōtizō), to illuminate, for the eyes of understanding. The shared light-family carries the image from the body’s seeing into inner perception made bright.
