What Does Micah 2:1 Mean in the King James?
Woe to them that devise iniquity, and work evil upon their beds! when the morning is light, they practise it, because it is in the power of their hand.

THE KEY
What appears in daylight as an act may be a plan rehearsed in private and waiting for the power to be carried out.
THE MEANING
The verse names a pattern alive now: harm can be arranged in private and put into action as soon as the means are at hand. The hand turns intention into consequence; the plan and its execution belong to one course.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that harm is always an impulsive mistake: here it is planned in private and done when power makes it possible.
THE ROOT
חֹשְׁבֵי
ḥōshəvê
GROWS FROM
חשב
Calculate, reckon, devise, plan
“devise” in this verse is ḥōshəvê. The root חשב carries the sense of reckoning as well as devising. Harm here is composed in advance: the bed is where the plan takes shape, and daylight is when it is enacted.
ALSO GROWS
machashavah: Thought, plan, intention
מַחֲשָׁבָה
This branch makes clear that the devising is an inward plan, not a sudden act.
cheshbon: Account, calculation, reckoning
חֶשְׁבּוֹן
Its sense of calculation echoes the deliberate shaping of what will later be done.
פֹעֲלֵי
poʿălê
GROWS FROM
פעל
Work, act, do
פעל names the carrying out, the work itself. Beside חשב, it traces the movement from a formed plan to an acted deed, joining intention and execution in one course.
ALSO GROWS
poʿal: Work, deed, action
פֹּעַל
This branch brings the verse’s planned evil into the realm of actual deeds.
peʿullah: Work, action; also wages
פְּעֻלָּה
It carries the sense of work performed, underlining that the plan is put into practice.
THE PATTERN
What is deliberately formed inwardly can take outward shape when the means to act are available.
He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief,Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.THE THREAD
He deviseth mischief upon his bed; he setteth himself in a way that is not good; he abhorreth not evil.“Devise” in Micah and “deviseth” here translate the same Hebrew root, חשב (ḥashav), meaning to reckon or plan. The shared bed scene reveals the same movement: a private design becomes a chosen way of acting.
