What Does Micah 3:11 Mean in the King James?
The heads thereof judge for reward, and the priests thereof teach for hire, and the prophets thereof divine for money: yet will they lean upon the LORD, and say, Is not the LORD among us? none evil can come upon us.

THE KEY
They put a price on judgment, instruction, and prophecy, then use God’s nearness as a guarantee that no harm can reach them.
THE MEANING
The verse holds paid spiritual authority beside the claim that the LORD is present and harm cannot come. Its contradiction is alive wherever God’s nearness is invoked to protect an arrangement built on purchased judgment and counsel.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that invoking God’s presence makes a paid, unjust system untouchable.
THE ROOT
יִשָּׁעֵנוּ
yishshaʿēnû
GROWS FROM
שען
shaʿan
To lean on, rely upon, or support oneself.
“lean” in this verse is yishshaʿēnû. The same root names leaning on something and the support that bears the weight. Their claim to rely on the LORD sits beside the practices the verse names, making their claimed support part of the contradiction.
ALSO GROWS
shaʿan: To lean on or rely upon.
שָׁעַן
This verb gives the verse’s claim of reliance its concrete sense: placing weight on a source of support.
mishʿenet: A staff or support.
מִשְׁעֶנֶת
The staff is what a person leans on; the branch makes reliance tangible as something expected to bear weight.
יוֹרוּ
yoru
GROWS FROM
ירה
y-r-h
To throw or point; in this form, to instruct or direct.
“teach” in this verse is yoru. The root of teaching carries the image of pointing or directing. Here that direction is offered for hire, so the verse places the price beside what the teaching is meant to provide: a way forward.
ALSO GROWS
torah: Instruction or direction.
תּוֹרָה
The shared root links the priests’ teaching to instruction that points a way.
moreh: A teacher or instructor.
מוֹרֶה
The teacher and the act of teaching grow from the same root of pointing and directing.
יִשְׁפְּטוּ
yishpeṭu
GROWS FROM
שפט
sh-p-ṭ
To judge, govern, or render a decision.
“judge” in this verse is yishpeṭu. The verb for judging and the noun for judgment share one seed. The verse shows that the decision-making act itself is performed for reward, binding public judgment to its price in the same line.
ALSO GROWS
mishpat: Judgment or justice.
מִשְׁפָּט
The shared root links the judges’ act to the justice their role is meant to render.
shofet: A judge.
שֹׁפֵט
The role and the act of judging come from the same root, joining the office to its responsibility.
THE PATTERN
A claim on God’s presence becomes false security when it is detached from justice.
Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves: every one loveth gifts, and followeth after rewards: they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them.Trust ye not in lying words, saying, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, The temple of the LORD, are these.Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.THE THREAD
And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.“Stay upon” and “lean upon” translate forms of שען (shaʿan), meaning to lean on or rely upon. Micah places the claim of reliance beside paid judgment and counsel; Isaiah’s verse opens the distinction by naming reliance upon the LORD “in truth.”
