What Does Nahum 2:8 Mean in the King James?
But Nineveh is of old like a pool of water: yet they shall flee away. Stand, stand, shall they cry; but none shall look back.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew holds two incompatible motions together: נָסִים (nāsîm, ‘fleeing’) continues while עִמְדוּ (ʿimdû, ‘stand!’) is shouted.
THE MEANING
Right now, the settled image of the pool collides with a people already fleeing, while a repeated voice calls, ‘Stand.’ No one looks back. The verse names the moment alarm carries the body beyond a command’s reach.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie is that repeating a command can always restore control once flight has begun; here, the crowd keeps moving and no one turns back.
THE ROOT
נָסִים
nāsîm
GROWS FROM
נוּס
nūs
To flee or escape.
“flee” in this verse is nāsîm. Because נָסִים (nāsîm, ‘fleeing’) is a participle, the flight is already in progress as עִמְדוּ (ʿimdû, ‘stand!’) is shouted. The verse holds ongoing escape and demanded stillness in one scene; the command lands amid movement rather than before it.
ALSO GROWS
yānūs: He flees.
יָנוּס
This finite form preserves the root consonants נ־ו־ס (n-w-s), showing flight as active movement.
mānôs: Refuge; a place of escape.
מָנוֹס
This noun preserves נ־ו־ס (n-w-s) and names a place one flees to.
עִמְדוּ
ʿimdû
GROWS FROM
עמד
ʿāmad
To stand, remain, or take one’s position.
The root holds both standing and remaining in position. Repeated twice, עִמְדוּ (ʿimdû, ‘stand!’) is an attempt to halt the bodies in flight, setting a call to hold position against their ongoing escape.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāmad: To stand or remain.
עָמַד
This verb form shares all three root consonants ע־מ־ד (ʿ-m-d) and carries the same idea of holding one’s position.
maʿămād: A standing, position, or status.
מַעֲמָד
This noun grows from עמד (ʿāmad, ‘stand’) and makes the idea of a held position explicit.
THE PATTERN
Under threat, the body’s movement reveals whether a command can still direct it.
And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.In that day, he which shall be upon the housetop, and his stuff in the house, let him not come down to take it away: and he that is in the field, let him likewise not return back.THE THREAD
Wherefore have I seen them dismayed and turned away back? and their mighty ones are beaten down, and are fled apace, and look not back: for fear was round about, saith the LORD.Nahum’s נָסִים (nāsîm, ‘fleeing’) and Jeremiah’s מָנוֹס (mānôs, ‘refuge or flight’) and יָנֻסוּ (yānusû, ‘they flee’) share the root נוּס (nūs, ‘flee’). Jeremiah also says they do not look back, so both verses hold escape and the vanished backward gaze together.
