What Does Nahum 3:17 Mean in the King James?

Thy crowned are as the locusts, and thy captains as the great grasshoppers, which camp in the hedges in the cold day, but when the sun ariseth they flee away, and their place is not known where they are.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

A crown and a multitude can be only a swarm: when the sun rises, even its place disappears.

The verse meets you where authority gathers in visible numbers and wears signs of permanence. Its presence can still be conditional: when the sun rises, the swarm scatters, and even the place it occupied cannot be identified. The display and disappearance belong to the same scene.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A crown and a multitude do not guarantee lasting authority.

מִנְּזָרַיִךְ

minzerayik

GROWS FROM

נזר

To separate, consecrate, or mark as set apart; the related noun means a crown or sign of dedication.

The title translated as “crowned ones” carries the image of what is marked apart and set with a crown. That distinction does not stabilize them: the verse places these set-apart figures among a swarm that leaves without a trace.

ALSO GROWS

nezer: Crown, diadem; a mark of consecration.

נֵזֶר

The crown is a sign of distinction, yet the crowned figures here share the locusts’ sudden dispersal.

nazir: A consecrated or set-apart person.

נָזִיר

This branch reveals the root’s sense of separation beneath the image of rank.

אַרְבֶּה

arbeh

GROWS FROM

רבה

To become many, increase, or multiply.

“locusts” in this verse is arbeh. Hebrew calls the locust arbeh, formed from the same seed as increase and multiplying. The comparison makes their apparent force a force of numbers, yet what multiplies can scatter when the sun rises.

ALSO GROWS

rav: Many, great, or abundant.

רָב

It makes the locust image carry abundance as well as the insect itself.

hirbah: To increase or multiply.

הִרְבָּה

The swarm’s size is an expression of the root’s movement toward becoming many.

וְנָדַד

wenadad

GROWS FROM

נדד

To flee, wander, or move away restlessly.

“flee away” in this verse is wenadad. The root describes flight as wandering dispersal, not just a change of address. The locusts scatter so thoroughly that their former place cannot be identified.

ALSO GROWS

nad: A fugitive or wanderer.

נָד

It names the condition of one who has been set moving away.

noded: A wanderer or one who roams.

נוֹדֵד

This branch echoes the restless dispersal that makes the swarm’s location disappear.

The force of a multitude can vanish when the conditions sustaining its presence change.

And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.
Exodus 10:19 · KJVA force present in overwhelming numbers is carried away until not one locust remains.
That bringeth the princes to nothing; he maketh the judges of the earth as vanity.
Isaiah 40:23 · KJVThose who hold rank can be brought to nothing, just as Nahum’s crowned figures scatter.
But the rich, in that he is made low: because as the flower of the grass he shall pass away. For the sun is no sooner risen with a burning heat, but it withereth the grass, and the flower thereof falleth, and the grace of the fashion of it perisheth: so also shall the rich man fade away in his ways.
James 1:10-11 · KJVThe rising sun exposes how quickly a visible display can wither and pass away.
And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and cast them into the Red sea; there remained not one locust in all the coasts of Egypt.
Exodus 10:19 · KJV

Nahum’s comparison uses arbeh, the same Hebrew word for locusts in Exodus. There the locust mass is carried off until not one remains, opening the same pattern: what looks overwhelming can disperse completely.
