What Does Nehemiah 1:9 Mean in the King James?
But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

THE KEY
The farthest scattering does not outrun the gathering that follows a return to God.
THE MEANING
This verse holds a condition and a wide-reaching promise together: turn toward God, keep his instruction, and do it. Even the farthest scattering remains within reach of his gathering; he brings the scattered to the place chosen to bear his nature. Distance does not make restoration impossible.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that once you are scattered too far, you are beyond the reach of restoration.
THE ROOT
שׁוּבוּ
shuvu
GROWS FROM
שׁוּב
shuv
To turn back, return.
The turn is relational: it means returning toward God, not merely changing course. תְּשׁוּבָה (teshuvah, return or turning) and מְשׁוּבָה (meshubah, turning away or backsliding) share this root; the hinge is the direction of the turn.
ALSO GROWS
teshuvah: Return, turning.
תְּשׁוּבָה
It makes clear that turning toward God is a return, not a detached change of behavior.
meshubah: Turning away, backsliding.
מְשׁוּבָה
It shows the same root can name a turning in the opposite direction; where the turn faces matters.
קִבֵּץ
qibbets
GROWS FROM
קבץ
qavats
To gather, collect.
“gather” in this verse is qibbets. The promise answers scattering with gathering: what is dispersed is collected and brought into a shared place. Hebrew words from this root can name both the act of gathering and the group that results, making restoration a movement from scattered pieces toward belonging.
ALSO GROWS
qibbuts: A gathering, collection.
קִבּוּץ
It carries the movement of the verse into the act of collecting what was dispersed.
qevutsah: A group, company.
קְבוּצָה
It shows what gathering produces: scattered individuals become a gathered body.
THE PATTERN
Scattering is not final: God gathers those who turn toward him into a place of belonging.
That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. The LORD doth build up Jerusalem: he gathereth together the outcasts of Israel.O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, which killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee; how often would I have gathered thy children together, as a hen doth gather her brood under her wings, and ye would not!THE THREAD
That then the LORD thy God will turn thy captivity, and have compassion upon thee, and will return and gather thee from all the nations, whither the LORD thy God hath scattered thee. Both verses use קבץ (qavats, gather) for God’s answer to scattering. Deuteronomy makes the same movement explicit: return, then gathering from wherever dispersion has carried you.
