What Does Nehemiah 13:15 Mean in the King James?
In those days saw I in Judah some treading wine presses on the sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and lading asses; as also wine, grapes, and figs, and all manner of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the sabbath day: and I testified against them in the day wherein they sold victuals.

THE KEY
The Sabbath is breached by a whole supply chain crossing into Jerusalem, whose name carries the sound of wholeness.
THE MEANING
The verse shows rest crowded out by a whole chain: harvest is gathered, animals are loaded, produce is carried into Jerusalem, and food is sold. The city whose name carries wholeness receives these burdens on the day marked for cessation. This still speaks wherever a whole chain of work is treated as ordinary because each stage is carried by someone else.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Rest remains intact as long as I do not personally harvest, carry, or sell. The verse exposes how the whole chain crosses the Sabbath boundary even when its work is distributed.
THE ROOT
שַׁבָּת
shabbat
GROWS FROM
שבת
sh-b-t
To cease, stop, or desist.
The Sabbath is more than a calendar label: its root carries the action of ceasing. The carrying and selling form a working chain that crosses the boundary marked by that cessation.
ALSO GROWS
shavat: To cease or stop.
שָׁבַת
This verb names the action beneath the Sabbath: work comes to a halt.
shabbaton: A solemn or complete rest.
שַׁבָּתוֹן
This related form presents cessation as a whole, bounded time of rest.
מַשָּׂא
massa
GROWS FROM
נשא
nasa
To lift, carry, or bear.
“Burdens” in this verse is massa. The English noun can make the loads seem static, but its root is an action: lifting and carrying. The breach includes the movement itself, the produce is borne through the city on the day marked for ceasing.
ALSO GROWS
nasa: To lift, carry, or bear.
נָשָׂא
The verb makes clear that the loads in the verse are part of ongoing labor.
nissa: Lifted or borne.
נִשָּׂא
The related form shows the load as something actively carried by another.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
sh-l-m
Whole or complete.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries שָׁלוֹם (shalom, wholeness) in its name. The whole chain of labor enters the city on the Sabbath, placing its burdens against that resonance.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness, completeness, or peace.
שָׁלוֹם
This is the word of wholeness carried in the city’s name.
shalem: Whole or complete.
שָׁלֵם
This form gives the name’s resonance a sense of intactness, set against the burdens entering the city.
THE PATTERN
Sabbath rest interrupts the whole chain of labor and extends cessation to the people and creatures whose work sustains it.
But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thine ox, nor thine ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; that thy manservant and thy maidservant may rest as well as thou. And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:THE THREAD
And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.Genesis uses שָׁבַת (shavat, cease) for God’s stopping from work, and the same root forms שַׁבָּת (shabbat, Sabbath). Nehemiah shows the reversal: carrying and selling continue through the day named for cessation.
