What Does Nehemiah 13:29 Mean in the King James?
Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood, and the covenant of the priesthood, and of the Levites.

THE KEY
The verse refuses to let priestly office shield its occupants: the polluted service is remembered as a breach of the covenant it carries.
THE MEANING
Sacred service is not made pure by its title: it can be polluted by the people entrusted with it, and the damage reaches the covenant they carry. The prayer places that breach before God to be remembered, not covered by the office.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A sacred title makes its holder’s conduct untouchable. This verse names the opposite: the office’s covenant can be violated, and that violation is remembered.
THE ROOT
כְּהֻנָּה
kehunah
GROWS FROM
כהן
K-H-N
To serve or officiate as a priest.
“priesthood” in this verse is kehunah. The same root names both the priest and the act of priestly service. The verse’s charge reaches beyond a title: the service itself has been polluted, along with the covenant it carries.
ALSO GROWS
kohen: Priest
כֹּהֵן
This is the person named by the same root that forms “priesthood,” joining the office to the one who carries it.
kihhen: Served or officiated as a priest
כִּהֵן
This verbal form makes the work explicit: the priesthood is enacted through service, not held as a title alone.
זָכְרָה
zāḵrāh
GROWS FROM
זכר
Z-K-R
To remember, call to mind, or bring into view.
The prayer asks that these people and their breach remain in view before God. Beside the stated pollution, “remember” carries the force of keeping the damage from being erased by the office’s standing.
ALSO GROWS
zikaron: Remembrance, memorial
זִכָּרוֹן
A memorial gives remembrance continuing form; the verse’s appeal likewise keeps the breach present.
zeker: Remembrance, mention
זֵכֶר
This noun shows the same root extending from remembering to what is kept in memory or named.
הַלְוִיִּם
ha-Leviyyim
GROWS FROM
לוה
L-W-H
To join, attach, or accompany.
Genesis links Levi’s name with joining: Leah says, “Now this time will my husband be joined unto me.” Here the Levites stand within the priestly service community whose covenant has been polluted.
ALSO GROWS
lāwāh: To join, attach, or accompany
לָוָה
This verb gives the joining sense associated with Levi’s name.
Levi: Levi; joined or attached, as interpreted in Genesis 29:34
לֵוִי
The verse’s “Levites” carries the name associated with joining into the very community named in the charge.
THE PATTERN
Entrusted service remains answerable when its keepers violate what it represents.
Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed. But he that knew not, and did commit things worthy of stripes, shall be beaten with few stripes. For unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required: and to whom men have committed much, of him they will ask the more.My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.THE THREAD
But ye are departed out of the way; ye have caused many to stumble at the law; ye have corrupted the covenant of Levi, saith the LORD of hosts.Nehemiah names the defiled priesthood and its covenant; Malachi names the same rupture as corruption of Levi’s covenant. Together they show the covenant carried by priestly service becoming the very thing violated.
