This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The room’s place inside God’s courts does not make its new purpose sacred; the breach is visible in what it is prepared to accommodate.

You see harm take the shape of a prepared room: Eliashib makes space for Tobiah inside the courts of God’s house. Tobiah’s name, ⁨טוֹבִיָּה⁩ (Toviyyah, “YHWH is good”), and Eliashib’s name, ⁨אֶלְיָשִׁיב⁩ (Elyashiv, “God restores”), do not change the verse’s judgment of the arrangement as evil. The sacred setting remains, but its use has changed.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A space does not keep its sacred purpose simply because it remains inside sacred walls; what it is prepared to serve matters.

וָאָבִינָה

va’avinah

GROWS FROM

בין

b-y-n

To distinguish, perceive, or discern; understanding that recognizes the difference between things.

The word translated “understood” comes from a root that also appears in ⁨בֵּין⁩ (beyn, “between”). The verse’s insight is the ability to see the difference between the house’s purpose and the use this chamber is given.

ALSO GROWS

beyn: Between; in the space or distinction separating things.

בֵּין

It echoes how discernment sees the difference between a room’s place in the courts and what it is now made to serve.

binah: Understanding or discernment.

בִּינָה

It shares the root behind the recognition that this arrangement is evil.

mevin: One who understands or discerns.

מֵבִין

It names the perceiving quality expressed when the verse says Nehemiah understood what Eliashib had done.

טוֹבִיָּה

Toviyyah

GROWS FROM

טוב

ṭ-w-b

Good, pleasing, or beneficial; the name joins this sense with “YHWH.”

Tobiah’s name means “YHWH is good,” carrying the root sense of good in the name of the person for whom the room is prepared. The name does not erase the verse’s judgment: the evil lies in the arrangement Eliashib makes.

ALSO GROWS

tov: Good or beneficial.

טוֹב

This is the good sense carried in Tobiah’s name, set beside the verse’s description of the arrangement as evil.

tovah: Goodness or what is good.

טוֹבָה

It shows the broader quality contained in the same root that forms the first part of Tobiah’s name.

אֶלְיָשִׁיב

Elyashiv

GROWS FROM

שׁוב

sh-w-b

To turn back or return; in a causative form, to bring back or restore.

Eliashib carries the name-sense “God restores.” Here he is the person making a room for Tobiah, and the verse lets the action, not the name’s sense, define the arrangement.

ALSO GROWS

shuv: To return or turn back.

שׁוּב

This is the root that carries the idea of returning, which appears in Eliashib’s name as restoration.

teshuvah: A return or turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

It is another branch of the same root, showing the return or restoration sense embedded in the name.

A sacred place is exposed by what its people make room for within it.

Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in my habitation; and honourest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?
1 Samuel 2:29 · KJVThe offerings and priestly service are turned toward personal advantage, showing what the sanctuary has been made to accommodate.
Is this house, which is called by my name, become a den of robbers in your eyes? Behold, even I have seen it, saith the LORD.
Jeremiah 7:11 · KJVThe house retains its sacred name while its actual use is described as a den of robbers.
And he taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves.
Mark 11:17 · KJVThe house of prayer is made into a den of thieves, as the chamber here is made to serve a different purpose within God’s house.
Then I commanded, and they cleansed the chambers: and thither brought I again the vessels of the house of God, with the meat offering and the frankincense.
Nehemiah 13:9 · KJV

Verse 9 returns to the same word, ⁨לִשְׁכָּה⁩ (lishkah, “chamber”), now in the plural for the rooms that are cleansed. The follow-up makes the shift visible: the chambers are brought back into use for the vessels and offerings of God’s house.
