THE KEY
The wall is repaired as strength is supplied section by section, by people who take hold of the work beside them.
THE MEANING
This verse shows restoration as connected work: each person strengthens a defined part, and the whole takes shape through neighboring efforts. The names Rehum and Hashabiah echo compassion and being considered by Yahweh, placing tenderness and regard within the work of repair.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that meaningful repair requires one person to do everything dissolves here: each worker has a portion, and the whole grows through connected contributions.
THE ROOT
הֶחֱזִיקוּ
heḥĕzîqû
GROWS FROM
חזק
ḥ-z-q
To be strong or firm; in this causative form, to strengthen, make firm, or hold fast.
The verb translated “repaired” comes from the root for becoming strong or firm, and here describes making the wall firm. Its repetition links each worker’s portion to the next: repair is strength supplied along a shared boundary.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāzaq: Be strong; become firm.
חָזַק
The root’s basic sense shows that repair restores firmness to what has been weakened.
heḥĕzîq: Strengthen; hold fast.
הֶחֱזִיק
This related form makes the workers’ action concrete: they hold the wall’s work firm in their assigned portions.
רְחוּם
Reḥûm
GROWS FROM
רחם
r-ḥ-m
To show compassion or tender care; Rehum means “compassionate.”
Rehum’s name grows from the root of compassion, which also gives the Hebrew word for womb. Tender care stands within this scene of strengthening a boundary: the work of repair carries both firmness and care.
ALSO GROWS
raḥûm: Compassionate; full of tender care.
רַחוּם
This form makes the name’s meaning plain and brings compassion into the workers’ shared task.
reḥem: Womb.
רֶחֶם
The same root’s image of sheltering life deepens the sense of care involved in restoring a vulnerable boundary.
חֲשַׁבְיָה
Ḥashavyāh
GROWS FROM
חשב
ḥ-sh-b
To think, reckon, consider, or devise; joined with Yah, the name means “Yah has considered.”
Hashabiah’s name carries the root of thoughtful regard and the sense of being considered by Yah. Beside the work allotted to each district, the name gives the scene a sense of considered attention made practical.
ALSO GROWS
ḥāshab: Think, consider, reckon, or devise.
חָשַׁב
The root connects the name to deliberate thought rather than accidental effort.
maḥăshābāh: Thought, plan, or design.
מַחְשָׁבָה
This branch echoes the purposeful design visible in repair carried out portion by portion.
THE PATTERN
A shared work becomes whole as each person strengthens the portion entrusted to them.
So built we the wall; and all the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him. From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.THE THREAD
Strengthen ye the weak hands, and confirm the feeble knees.Isaiah uses the same root חזק (ḥāzaq) for “Strengthen” that Nehemiah uses for “repaired.” In both verses, the root names strength made firm where weakness is present.
