What Does Nehemiah 3:8 Mean in the King James?
Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall.

THE KEY
The refiner and the compounder strengthen the same wall, giving visible form to the wholeness carried by Yerushalayim (יְרוּשָׁלַיִם, Yerushalayim) and shalom (שָׁלוֹם, shalom: wholeness).
THE MEANING
Your life is strengthened when different kinds of skill serve one shared repair: the refiner and the apothecary both bring their craft to the wall. Wholeness takes visible form as shared space made firm and broad.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that repair belongs to one kind of worker: a goldsmith and an apothecary strengthen the same city.
THE ROOT
הֶחֱזִיק
heḥĕzîq
GROWS FROM
חזק
Be strong or firm; in the causative form, make strong.
The same verb describes both workers’ labor: they make the wall strong. “Repaired” carries the further sense of strength restored to the city through their work.
ALSO GROWS
chazaq: Be strong, grow firm.
חָזַק
The state the repair restores, firmness, is already inside the root.
chizzeq: Strengthen, reinforce.
חִזֵּק
This causative form names the action behind the repair: making something strong.
הַצֹּרְפִים
hatstsorephim
GROWS FROM
צרף
Smelt, refine, or test by fire.
“goldsmiths” in this verse is hatstsorephim. The occupation grows from the act of refining. Those strengthening the city’s boundary are themselves named by careful work that separates metal from what obscures it.
ALSO GROWS
tsoreph: Goldsmith, refiner.
צֹרֵף
The word names the craft practiced by the workers in this verse.
tserufah: Refined, tested.
צְרוּפָה
The same root connects the goldsmith’s work with the testing and refinement that make metal ready.
הָרֹקְחִים
hā-rōqḥîm
GROWS FROM
רקח
Compound or mix aromatic substances.
The apothecaries are named for compounding ingredients into a prepared mixture. Their craft stands beside the goldsmiths’ refining: distinct kinds of careful work strengthen one shared city.
ALSO GROWS
roqeah: Perfumer, compounder of aromatic substances.
רֹקֵחַ
This singular form names the craft behind the workers’ title.
mirkachat: A compound ointment or perfume.
מִרְקַחַת
The root’s branches show how mixing becomes a finished preparation, just as each craft contributes to a larger repair.
THE PATTERN
Shared wholeness grows firmer when people bring different crafts to one common repair.
To devise cunning works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,They gave money also unto the masons, and to the carpenters; and meat, and drink, and oil, unto them of Zidon, and to them of Tyre, to bring cedar trees from Lebanon to the sea of Joppa, according to the grant that they had of Cyrus king of Persia. And the eye cannot say unto the hand, I have no need of thee: nor again the head to the feet, I have no need of you.THE THREAD
Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Let your hands be strong, ye that hear in these days these words by the mouth of the prophets, which were in the day that the foundation of the house of the LORD of hosts was laid, that the temple might be built.Nehemiah’s “repaired” comes from חזק (chazaq: be strong, make strong), the same root behind Zechariah’s “Let your hands be strong.” The shared root makes strength visible in the hands engaged in rebuilding.
