What Does Nehemiah 4:13 Mean in the King James?
Therefore set I in the lower places behind the wall, and on the higher places, I even set the people after their families with their swords, their spears, and their bows.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The defense begins by giving people a place to stand where the wall is most exposed.
THE MEANING
The reader’s vulnerable work is strengthened when people take deliberate positions at its low and high places, equipped to protect what is being rebuilt. Shared purpose becomes visible as coordinated presence, and defense belongs inside restoration.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the idea that protecting the work interrupts the work; here, protection is part of how the rebuilding continues.
THE ROOT
וָאַעֲמִיד
va’a’amid
GROWS FROM
עמד
To stand, remain, or take one’s place; in this form, to cause to stand or station.
The verb does not merely say the people are present; it shows them deliberately made to stand in position. English “set” hides that standing posture: their placement becomes a human line of defense for the wall.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāmad: To stand, remain, or take a position.
עָמַד
The people are stationed so their presence itself guards the exposed places.
maʿamad: A standing place or station.
מַעֲמָד
This branch makes the location part of the idea: each person stands in a chosen place within the defense.
THE PATTERN
Restoration holds vulnerable places by placing people there, equipped to protect what is being built.
They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon.A Song of degrees for Solomon. Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.THE THREAD
Nevertheless we made our prayer unto our God, and set a watch against them day and night, because of them. The same verb-root, עמד (ʿāmad), underlies “set” here and “set a watch” there: both describe deliberately stationing a presence. Together, the verses show watchfulness established first, then people placed at the wall’s exposed points.
