What Does Nehemiah 6:7 Mean in the King James?
And thou hast also appointed prophets to preach of thee at Jerusalem, saying, There is a king in Judah: and now shall it be reported to the king according to these words. Come now therefore, and let us take counsel together.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The threat works by making an accusation sound publicly established before it reaches the king.
THE MEANING
This verse shows how pressure works now: a claim is presented as already circulating, and its expected arrival before power is used to press for a meeting. The meeting is called counsel, but it comes attached to the accusation and threat, so its name alone does not make it neutral.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that an invitation to talk is necessarily neutral or offered in good faith; here, it arrives as part of the pressure.
THE ROOT
נִוָּעֲצָה
nivvaʿatsah
GROWS FROM
יעץ
yaʿats
Advise, deliberate, or form a plan.
“counsel together” in this verse is nivvaʿatsah. The invitation to deliberate and the plan being advanced belong to the same word-family. The word “counsel” can sound neutral, but its root keeps the design behind a consultation in view.
ALSO GROWS
ʿetsah: Counsel or plan.
עֵצָה
The same root names both the act of consulting and the plan that consultation can produce.
yoʿets: Counselor or adviser.
יוֹעֵץ
An adviser gives direction; the invitation’s wording alone cannot tell you what that direction serves.
הֶעֱמַדְתָּ
heʿemadta
GROWS FROM
עמד
ʿamad
Stand, remain, or take a position.
“appointed” in this verse is heʿemadta. The verb carries the picture of making someone stand or setting them in place. The accusation describes prophets as placed in positions to speak, making the supposed public message sound arranged rather than spontaneous.
ALSO GROWS
ʿamad: To stand or remain.
עָמַד
This is the root’s basic image, beneath the sense of setting someone in a position.
maʿamad: A standing, position, or post.
מַעֲמָד
It shows how the root can name the position someone is made to occupy.
יְרוּשָׁלַיִם
Yerushalayim
GROWS FROM
שלם
shalem
Be whole or complete.
“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. The name carries shalom, wholeness, with the dual ending: two wholenesses. Here, the city’s public voice becomes the setting for a narrowing accusation, sharpening the tension between the place’s name and the pressure aimed through it.
ALSO GROWS
shalom: Wholeness.
שָׁלוֹם
The name’s shalom element holds the idea of wholeness within the city’s name.
shalem: Whole or complete.
שָׁלֵם
This form from the same root makes the name’s connection to wholeness visible.
THE PATTERN
A public charge can be staged or amplified to create coercive pressure against a person.
And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died. And set up false witnesses, which said, This man ceaseth not to speak blasphemous words against this holy place, and the law:For many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.THE THREAD
Take counsel together, and it shall come to nought; speak the word, and it shall not stand: for God is with us.The phrase translated “take counsel together” uses נִוָּעֲצָה (nivvaʿatsah, deliberate together), from יָעַץ (yaʿats, advise or form a plan); Isaiah 8:10 uses the same root in “Take counsel together.” Its next words say such a plan can come to nothing, opening this invitation as a plan whose friendly wording does not settle what it serves.
