What Does Nehemiah 7:3 Mean in the King James?
And I said unto them, Let not the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun be hot; and while they stand by, let them shut the doors, and bar them: and appoint watches of the inhabitants of Jerusalem, every one in his watch, and every one to be over against his house.

THE KEY
Jerusalem is guarded by timed boundaries and by giving each person a watch at the threshold closest to home.
THE MEANING
The verse shows safety taking shape through deliberate boundaries and ordinary people stationed where they can guard what is near them. The gate opens only when the sun is hot, while barred doors and assigned watches extend that care from the city entrance to each household. Watchfulness is shared and specific.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie this undoes is that a strong wall alone makes a city safe; here, protection also depends on residents keeping watch at their own thresholds.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁמָרוֹת
mishmarot
GROWS FROM
שׁמר
שׁמר (shamar) means to keep, guard, or watch over: to protect by remaining attentive to what is entrusted.
“watches” in this verse is mishmarot. English “watch” can sound like simply looking, but מִשְׁמָרוֹת names assigned guard duties, from the root שׁמר, “keep” or “guard.” The verse makes protection concrete: people take their posts at the gate and opposite their own homes.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: One who keeps watch or guards.
שֹׁמֵר
The watch is carried by a person with a place to tend, not by vigilance as an abstraction.
mishmeret: An entrusted duty or assigned watch.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
This branch echoes the verse’s ordered watches: each person has a particular post.
THE PATTERN
A community’s safety depends on alertness being shared and tied to the places each person is entrusted to guard.
Likewise at the same time said I unto the people, Let every one with his servant lodge within Jerusalem, that in the night they may be a guard to us, and labour on the day.She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. That there should be no schism in the body; but that the members should have the same care one for another.THE THREAD
The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore. The Hebrew word translated “preserve” comes from the same root, שׁמר (shamar), as the watches in Nehemiah. The local guards at each threshold open onto a wider image of keeping that covers every going out and coming in.
