THE KEY
The verse counts the gatekeepers among the restored, making the tending of thresholds part of restoration itself.
THE MEANING
The verse makes threshold keeping visible: those who hold the entrances are named through their families and counted. In a life or community being restored, the people who tend its passages belong to that restoration.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Restoration is only about those at the center; the people who guard access are peripheral and interchangeable.
THE ROOT
הַשֹּׁעֲרִים
ha-sho'arim
GROWS FROM
שער
Sha’ar: gate, entrance, threshold.
“porters” in this verse is ha-sho'arim. The Hebrew calls them sho’arim, gatekeepers from sha’ar, gate: their name joins their role to the threshold they tend. Because the verse names their families and counts them, this threshold work appears as recognized work within restoration.
ALSO GROWS
sha'ar: A gate or entrance.
שַׁעַר
This is the place of passage at the center of the gatekeepers’ name and work.
sho'er: One who keeps a gate.
שֹׁעֵר
The plural form in the verse identifies these people by their care of the threshold.
THE PATTERN
Communities that are restored or guarded recognize the people who tend their thresholds.
All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office. For a day in thy courts is better than a thousand. I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.THE THREAD
All these which were chosen to be porters in the gates were two hundred and twelve. These were reckoned by their genealogy in their villages, whom David and Samuel the seer did ordain in their set office. The same Hebrew word, שֹׁעֲרִים (sho’arim, gatekeepers), names the porters in both verses. Their shared root makes the tally part of a larger pattern: the people who tend the gates have a recognized place in the community’s life.
