King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Caleb’s “followed me fully” carries the image of a life filled in God’s wake.
THE MEANING
Here, Caleb’s “another spirit” is a different breath within him, made visible in how fully he follows. God brings him into the land he enters, and his seed possesses it: the verse holds inward direction and an inheritance beyond one life together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The verse undoes the belief that what lives within you is private and has no bearing on what becomes possible or what reaches the next generation.
THE ROOT
וַיְמַלֵּא אַחֲרָי
vaymalle acharai
GROWS FROM
מלא
m-l-ʾ
to fill, be full
The Hebrew phrase is built from “fill” and “after me,” giving “followed me fully” the image of a life made full in God’s wake. Caleb’s following is described as fullness oriented toward God.
ALSO GROWS
maleʾ: full; filled
מָלֵא
This form shows the root’s basic image of fullness behind the verse’s description of Caleb.
millu’im: fillings; consecration or ordination, literally “filling”
מִלֻּאִים
The root can describe a filling that equips a role, showing fullness as a life given its shape.
רוּחַ אַחֶרֶת
ruach acheret
GROWS FROM
רוח
r-w-ḥ
breath or wind, air in motion
Ruach is one Hebrew word for breath, wind, and spirit, so Caleb has a different breath within him. Its consonants echo in רֶוַח (revach), “room” or “relief,” connecting that breath with the opening of space.
ALSO GROWS
ruach: breath, wind, spirit
רוּחַ
The same word holds the breath within Caleb and the wind moving through the open air.
revach: room, relief, respite
רֶוַח
This related form lets the different breath resonate with the movement from constriction toward room.
THE PATTERN
The breath within a person is disclosed by the direction it leads and the inheritance that follows.
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.THE THREAD
Nevertheless my brethren that went up with me made the heart of the people melt: but I wholly followed the LORD my God.Joshua 14:8 repeats the same מלא (maleʾ, “fill”) root behind “followed me fully.” Numbers gives the phrase as filling after God; Joshua preserves the image in Caleb’s own words.
