What Does Numbers 14:35 Mean in the King James?
I the LORD have said, I will surely do it unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against me: in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew calls them an assembly and says they have convened against the LORD: their shared gathering is itself framed as opposition.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks with terrible finality: the LORD’s declaration falls on a whole congregation gathered against him. Its members are consumed and die in the wilderness; the sentence leaves no path through that wilderness for this generation.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that shared conviction makes a community safe: a congregation’s unity does not cancel the consequence declared against it.
THE ROOT
הַנּוֹעָדִים
han-no'adim
GROWS FROM
יעד
to appoint, meet, or assemble
The verse calls the people an עֵדָה (edah, “assembly”) and describes them with a verb from יעד (ya’ad, “to assemble or meet”). English presents “congregation” and “gathered together” as separate ideas, while Hebrew links the assembled people to the act of convening, and names what they have convened against.
ALSO GROWS
mo'ed: appointed time or meeting
מוֹעֵד
A mo’ed is a meeting set in place; the shared root highlights that gathering has a direction and purpose.
edah: assembly or congregation
עֵדָה
This is the word for the group itself in the verse, linking the congregation to the act of assembling.
יִתַּמּוּ
yittammū
GROWS FROM
תמם
to be complete, finished, or brought to an end
The Hebrew verb comes from תמם (tamam, “to reach completion or an end”). Beside “there they shall die,” it gives “consumed” the stark force of a life brought to its endpoint in the wilderness.
ALSO GROWS
tam: complete or whole
תָּם
This branch shows the root’s basic sense of completion, which in this sentence is the completion of a generation’s life.
tamim: whole, sound, or complete
תָּמִים
The same root can describe wholeness; here its completion sense carries the opposite, grave outcome of being finished.
THE PATTERN
A gathering is shaped by what it convenes toward: the same assembly can gather at God’s summons or against God.
And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. And when they shall blow with them, all the assembly shall assemble themselves to thee at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation. The kings of the earth stood up, and the rulers were gathered together against the Lord, and against his Christ.THE THREAD
And the space in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we were come over the brook Zered, was thirty and eight years; until all the generation of the men of war were wasted out from among the host, as the LORD sware unto them. The same Hebrew root תמם (tamam, “to reach completion or an end”) underlies “consumed” here and “wasted out” there. The repeated root makes the wilderness the place where this generation reaches its end.
