What Does Numbers 2:17 Mean in the King James?
Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set forward with the camp of the Levites in the midst of the camp: as they encamp, so shall they set forward, every man in his place by their standards.

THE KEY
The center does not wait for the people to settle; the dwelling itself moves with them.
THE MEANING
The dwelling sits in the middle of the moving community, and the camp keeps its order as it travels. The center is present in motion as surely as in rest; your place remains part of the whole while life is underway.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The presence at the center is not available only when life is settled.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁכָּן
mishkan
GROWS FROM
שׁכן
sh-k-n
to dwell, settle, remain
The word rendered “tabernacle” grows from the verb for dwelling: the sanctuary is defined by dwelling, not by a fixed address. Here it moves with the camp, so its place at the center travels with the people.
ALSO GROWS
shakhan: to dwell, settle
שָׁכַן
This verb names the dwelling that the tabernacle embodies, making its presence among the people central to what it is.
shakhen: neighbor, one who dwells nearby
שָׁכֵן
The same root links dwelling with nearness: the center is among the community, not set apart at a distant destination.
נֹסֵעַ
noseaʿ
GROWS FROM
נסע
n-s-ʿ
to set out, pull up, journey
“set forward” in this verse is noseaʿ. The movement verb marks the tabernacle’s departure and appears again for the people’s departure. The dwelling and the camp move on the same rhythm, so travel does not mean the center disappears.
ALSO GROWS
nasaʿ: to set out, journey
נָסַע
This is the root verb behind the tabernacle setting forward with the camp.
massaʿ: journey, stage of a journey
מַסָּע
A journey unfolds through stages, while the verse shows the camp keeping its shared order as it moves.
יַחֲנוּ
yaḥanu
GROWS FROM
חנה
ḥ-n-h
to encamp, settle temporarily
“encamp” in this verse is yaḥanu. The verse pairs encamping with setting out: the community gathers into a camp, then carries its order forward. The dwelling remains at the center through both states.
ALSO GROWS
ḥanah: to encamp, settle
חָנָה
This is the root verb for the camp’s gathered arrangement before it moves.
maḥaneh: camp, encampment, host
מַחֲנֶה
The word names both the Levite camp and the surrounding camps whose shared center moves with them.
THE PATTERN
The dwelling remains among the people as their ordered community moves.
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. And they departed from the mount of the LORD three days’ journey: and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them in the three days’ journey, to search out a resting place for them. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.THE THREAD
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.Numbers names the moving dwelling מִשְׁכָּן (mishkan, dwelling place), while Exodus uses שָׁכַן (shakhan, to dwell) for “dwell among them”; both grow from שׁכן (sh-k-n, to dwell). Numbers makes that nearness concrete: the dwelling remains among the people at the center of their ordered movement.
