What Does Numbers 2:2 Mean in the King James?
Every man of the children of Israel shall pitch by his own standard, with the ensign of their father’s house: far off about the tabernacle of the congregation shall they pitch.

THE KEY
The shared center holds the people together without making their banners identical.
THE MEANING
Your place among others stays particular: the mark of your household remains visible, and your position takes shape around a shared meeting place. The center gathers the people without becoming another household’s possession.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Belonging does not require you to lose your distinct identity, and your own group is not the center of the whole.
THE ROOT
דֶּגֶל
degel
GROWS FROM
ד־ג־ל
d-g-l
To raise or display a banner; to be conspicuous under a standard.
The standard makes a group’s identity visible. The same root appears when the speaker says, “in the name of our God we will set up our banners,” joining a people’s visible mark with the nature they stand under.
ALSO GROWS
dagal: To raise or display a banner; to be conspicuous.
דָּגַל
This verb shows the standard as an active public marker, not merely a label.
nidgol: We will set up our banners (Psalm 20:5).
נִדְגֹּל
The banner makes a people’s relation to God’s name visible.
מִנֶּגֶד
minneged
GROWS FROM
נ־ג־ד
n-g-d
To be in front or conspicuous; by extension, to make known or declare.
“far off / opposite” in this verse is minneged. The camp’s position is opposite the tent, facing it across a distance. This word family also carries the sense of declaring or making known: the arrangement makes the people’s relation to the center visible.
ALSO GROWS
neged: Before, in front of, or opposite.
נֶגֶד
This is the spatial relation that places the camps facing the tent.
higgid: He told or declared.
הִגִּיד
The root links what is set before others with what is made known.
nagid: Leader, prince, or prominent one.
נָגִיד
The prominent figure is one who stands out or comes to the front.
מוֹעֵד
mo'ed
GROWS FROM
י־ע־ד
y-ʿ-d
To appoint, designate, or set for a meeting.
The tent at the center is the tent of appointed meeting. The word carries the sense of a designated time or place, so the people are arranged around an encounter, not just a landmark.
ALSO GROWS
ya'ad: To appoint or designate.
יָעַד
The root gives the meeting place its sense of being appointed.
mo'ed: An appointed time, place, or meeting.
מוֹעֵד
This is the word naming the encounter around which the camp is arranged.
THE PATTERN
Distinct places and identities can form one people when each remains oriented around a shared center.
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. But now hath God set the members every one of them in the body, as it hath pleased him.And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God.THE THREAD
We will rejoice in thy salvation, and in the name of our God we will set up our banners: the LORD fulfil all thy petitions. The word translated “banners” shares the ד־ג־ל root with “standard” here. Numbers shows each household marked by its banner; Psalm places that visible mark under the nature of God’s name.
