King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse moves from taking a city to living in it: possession becomes a daily reality through dwelling.
THE MEANING
Israel takes the Amorite cities and then settles in them; the verse keeps capture and residence as distinct acts. A seized place becomes the setting of ordinary life when people dwell there. The line makes possession more than a claim: it is also occupancy.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that taking something and inhabiting it are the same act: the verse names them separately.
THE ROOT
וַיֵּשֶׁב
vayeshev
GROWS FROM
י־ש־ב
To sit, settle, remain, or dwell.
“dwelt” in this verse is vayeshev. The Hebrew root gathers sitting, remaining, and dwelling into one movement: staying in a place. Its branches name both a settlement and a resident, showing how the verse moves beyond taking cities to inhabiting them.
ALSO GROWS
moshav: Dwelling, seat, or settlement.
מוֹשָׁב
The city becomes a place of settled life, not simply something taken.
toshav: Resident or settler.
תּוֹשָׁב
The root describes not only where people stay, but people whose lives are established there.
THE PATTERN
A place becomes lived reality through the presence that settles within it.
And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.THE THREAD
And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.Joshua uses the same Hebrew root for “dwelt,” יָשַׁב (yashav), and joins dwelling with possession. Numbers names the cities Israel takes; Joshua widens the view to the land in which they settle.
