This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The donkey sees the messenger before Balaam does, and Balaam answers with a blow what he cannot see.

The donkey sees the messenger and falls beneath Balaam; Balaam sees only the interruption and strikes her. The verse holds clear sight in the creature beneath him and blindness in the one wielding the staff. It speaks now wherever force answers an obstruction whose cause remains unseen.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A person or creature that stops my movement is not necessarily confused or defiant. Here, the one being struck perceives what the one striking cannot.

וַתֵּרֶא

wattēreʾ

GROWS FROM

ראה

To see, look, or perceive.

English “saw” can sound like mere eyesight, but ⁨ראה⁩ also forms ⁨רֹאֶה⁩, a seer, and ⁨מַרְאֶה⁩, a sight or appearance: seeing reaches toward what is disclosed. The donkey’s perception comes before Balaam’s; the blow falls on the one who sees what is actually there.

ALSO GROWS

rōʾeh: A seer; one who sees.

רֹאֶה

This branch makes the donkey’s act more than a glance: she perceives what Balaam has not yet perceived.

marʾeh: Sight, appearance, or vision.

מַרְאֶה

The messenger is present but unseen to Balaam, showing that what appears to one observer may remain hidden from another.

What is present but unseen becomes recognizable when sight is opened.

And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink.
Genesis 21:19 · KJVHagar sees water already present when her eyes are opened to it.
And Elisha prayed, and said, LORD, I pray thee, open his eyes, that he may see. And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha.
2 Kings 6:17 · KJVThe young man’s sight reveals what was already surrounding him.
And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
Luke 24:31 · KJVOpened eyes turn an unnoticed presence into recognition.
Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, and his sword drawn in his hand: and he bowed down his head, and fell flat on his face.
Numbers 22:31 · KJV

The same root ⁨ראה⁩ appears when Balaam finally sees the messenger his donkey already saw. His sight comes only after he has struck the creature whose perception was ahead of his.
