This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The messenger is sent as Balaam’s adversary because the way he is forcing forward already runs contrary to the messenger.

The verse names a live reversal: resistance can expose a direction already running contrary. The traveler strikes what slows him, while the messenger identifies his own way as the danger. What appears to be an adversary can be the one confronting a path turned against him.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that every resistance means the one resisting is wrong and forward pressure is justified.

לְשָׂטָן

ləśāṭān

GROWS FROM

שׂטן

ś-ṭ-n

To oppose or act as an adversary.

The verb translated “withstand” comes from the root for adversary: the messenger goes out to oppose Balaam. Here opposition describes the messenger’s role toward Balaam, not a fixed identity.

ALSO GROWS

śāṭān: Adversary, opponent

שָׂטָן

In 1 Kings 11:14, the same root names an adversary raised against Solomon; here it describes the messenger’s opposing role toward Balaam.

śiṭnāh: Hostility, strife

שִׂטְנָה

The name Sitnah is given to a well over which there is strife (Genesis 26:21), showing the root’s sense of opposition between parties.

דֶּרֶךְ

déreḵ

GROWS FROM

דרך

d-r-k

To tread, step, or make a track.

The word for “way” grows from the verb for treading: a way is a track made by movement. The verse holds a literal road and the course of one’s conduct together, so Balaam’s direction matters as much as his forward motion.

ALSO GROWS

dāraḵ: To tread, step, travel

דָּרַךְ

This verb is the movement that makes a way; Balaam’s repeated push forward does not make his course right.

déreḵ: Road, route, way of conduct

דֶּרֶךְ

The same word can name a physical path or a course of conduct, joining Balaam’s route with the way he is proceeding.

A path’s apparent rightness does not settle its direction; its end and its alignment disclose what it is.

There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs 14:12 · KJVA way that feels right to the traveler is still measured by where it leads.
And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
Psalm 139:24 · KJVThe verse treats one’s way as something that can be exposed and redirected.
Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia,
Acts 16:6 · KJVA planned route meets a closed passage, showing that forward momentum does not by itself settle the right direction.
And the LORD stirred up an adversary unto Solomon, Hadad the Edomite: he was of the king’s seed in Edom.
1 Kings 11:14 · KJV

The Hebrew word for “adversary” here shares the ⁨שׂטן⁩ root with the verb translated “withstand” in Numbers. The shared root shows opposition as a role in a relationship: in this verse, the LORD’s messenger takes that role against Balaam’s way.
