What Does Numbers 24:11 Mean in the King James?
Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The honour Balak meant to give is weight in Hebrew, and even a king’s promise cannot make that weight his to bestow.
THE MEANING
Human intention can promise you honour without being able to ensure it; the promised weight may still be withheld. Here the LORD is named as the one who stops the promotion, making the limits of human power plain.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A person’s promise to elevate me guarantees the honour I want. The verse names a limit no human promise can override.
THE ROOT
כָּבוֹד
kavod
GROWS FROM
כבד
K-B-D
To be heavy; weight or weightiness.
The two mentions of honour echo the same Hebrew word, kavod: Balak’s planned promotion and the honour he says the LORD withheld are both weight. The verse makes recognition tangible, weight a person may intend to give but cannot command.
ALSO GROWS
kaved: Heavy; also the liver.
כָּבֵד
The sense of heaviness shows the physical meaning beneath honour: what carries weight has standing.
kavad: To be heavy, make weighty, or honour.
כָּבַד
Balak’s promise to honour Balaam and his claim that the LORD withheld honour turn on this same root.
מְנָעֲךָ
menaʿakha
GROWS FROM
מנע
M-N-ʿ
To withhold, restrain, or prevent.
“kept thee back” in this verse is menaʿakha. The verse describes an active withholding, not simply an honour that never appeared. Balak’s intention is present, but the root names a force that prevents it from becoming the outcome.
ALSO GROWS
manaʿ: To withhold or restrain.
מָנַע
This is the verb at the center of the claim: the honour is held back from Balaam.
yimnaʿ: He or it withholds; used for “withhold” in Psalm 84:11.
יִמְנַע
The same root can describe deliberate withholding, sharpening the force of “kept thee back” here.
THE PATTERN
Promised elevation remains beyond human control when the LORD determines who is lifted.
The LORD maketh poor, and maketh rich: he bringeth low, and lifteth up.For promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south. But God is the judge: he putteth down one, and setteth up another. For whosoever exalteth himself shall be abased; and he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.THE THREAD
Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle.Numbers uses כָּבוֹד (kavod, weight) for the honour Balak meant to confer and says the LORD withheld it. Psalm 24 calls the LORD the King of that same kavod, shifting the deepest weight from human status to the LORD.
